Every drawing should start with a sketch. The best way to start a sketch is with basic shapes. A circle for the head, triangle for the chest and so on. These are the shapes I tend to use:

It looks a mess, sure, but that's how a sketch should look. Though even I don't know what the shape I use for the chest is. I'd advice against using the shape tool and form the shapes by drawing them several times in one place. This just makes the whole thing look more natural when it's done.
Anyway, from here you add details. Like with the shapes, draw the lines several times with short strokes. This isn't lineart, so the lines can be messy. The reason you do this is so that when you begin drawing the lines you can tell where those lines are meant to go. No one gets a drawing right first time, so with a sketch you can experiment, use the transform tool, erase lines you don't like, etc.
