More than a year has already passed since I moved to this small town. No, it might be two years soon. I don't know for sure because I don't care about the date, but I spent a certain amount of time in this town.
Still, hardly any residents want to talk to me. I have no ill feelings toward the residents who keep a distance by making rumors that I'm a weirdo. I think it's natural.
A woman in her twenties lives alone in a hovel by the seaside, looking at the sea every day without doing any work. I wouldn't even want to talk to someone like that.
However, there are two people in this town who talk to me.
One is an old man who works as a restaurant owner. I eat there almost every day, so I think the owner treats me with a certain amount of courtesy as a customer.
As proof of that, even when I tried to remember what they talk about, it was all about the weather, such as "It's nice weather today, isn't it?", "It's getting cold", and "It's going to rain". And I can only answer like "Yes" or "Yeah", so they can not keep the conversation at all.
It was the other person who was difficult to understand.
Unless there's something really wrong, I spend the rest of the day on the edge of the breakwater jutting out into the sea. Sit at the foot of a small red lighthouse and spend my time staring blankly at the sea.
The only time I leave that place during that time is when I go to the restaurant to eat. It's long past lunchtime, and when the number of customers has stopped, I head to the restaurant.
Another person who talks to me is Jennie Kim, the only daughter who works in the restaurant.
When I first came to this town, even Jennie seemed to be wary of me. However, after exchanging a few words with the restaurant owner, Jennie also began to mix in and gradually began to ask questions about this and that.
Unlike the owner, she asked me questions about my name, age, and why I came to this town, also every other detail about me. Of course, I didn't answer all of them.
Even so, Jennie talked to me every day without hesitation.
And because I inadvertently leaked out that my only meal of the day was the set meal I ate in the restaurant, Jennie ended up coming to deliver me a dosirak every morning.
The season has already entered winter, and the early morning wind blowing from the sea feels like it's stinging my skin. I'm cold-tolerant, but I still feel cold today. It might be better to wear a little more clothes from tomorrow.
As I was thinking about that, footsteps approached from behind and a bright voice poured out, "Good morning, Lisa. It's nice weather today, isn't it?"
I neither turn around nor reply.
However, Jennie didn't seem to care about that, and she sat next to me as if it was a matter of course.
"I thought it might be cold today, so I brought a pot of seaweed soup. Also, I make kimbap and for the side dish, there is rolled omelet and pickled radish..." Jennie gleefully start to explain what I didn't ask for.
At first, I refused this dosirak, but it became troublesome to refuse it halfway through. She won by sheer dogged persistence.
"Isn't that a bit too much?"
"There aren't many. Lisa, you don't eat, so you're really thin. Your legs are only about half of mine, aren't they?" Jennie puffs her cheeks and says.
Ignoring those words, I picked the omelet between my fingers and stuffed my mouth.
"Mmm, it's delicious."
"Really? I'm glad."
Jennie suddenly blushed and narrowed her eyes. To be honest, it's a little fun to watch Jennie's facial expressions change so much.
But I don't understand why Jennie is so attached to me and that makes her uncomfortable. For Jennie, who grew up peacefully in the countryside, I think someone like me is a rare sight. But if that's the case, she should be watching from afar like the other residents.
I can't help but suspect that there is something behind her approaching me.
"You don't have to do this anymore."
"Are you bothered?"
"Yes"
While saying that, I bit into Kimbap.
"Is that so... But I'll come tomorrow too."
I take a deep breath.
"Don't bother me. You know what I'm being rumored." It's a conversation that has been repeated many times.
"That...you are a weirdo? It's just that everyone doesn't know about you."
"You don't know me either, do you?"
"I know quite a bit. You don't like the heat and are strong against the cold. Even when you said it's a nuisance, you eat dosirak properly, and you like sweet egg rolled omelet..."
"It's not something like that..."
I stopped there. I'm not going to tell anyone about my upbringing. You could say that what Jennie knows is all I can reveal.
"And then... a person who came to this town alone even though she's still young. Because I'm a coward who can't leave this town... I think it's really amazing."
This is probably what makes Jennie interested in me. Although she longed for the outside world, she could not leave this town. She has a curiosity about me, who just happened to show up in this town alone as a woman.
If she knew why I came to this town alone, Jennie might suddenly lose interest. But even if I don't do that, all I have to do is leave this town.
Even after coming to this town and staring at the sea all the time, I haven't gotten the results I want. Maybe it's time to move to another city. While thinking that, I stared at the horizon where the whitecaps were rippling.
