I stare into the flames my eyes blurring over from watching the fire for so long. It had been at least three hours since my brother told me he would be back from his 'little outing.' Nakahara had returned an hour ago and was passed out on the couch, an empty bottle of wine loosely gripped in his hand. His beloved hat covering half of his face. The sound of the bar's door opening made my heart leap. I turn, whipping my head around hoping to to see the black and white hair and dark scowl that belonged to my older brother, Ryunosuke. However my eyes drooped at the sight of a large man dressed in a black suit. At his waist was a belt where several weapons hung. He grunted at the sight of Nakahara passed out on the couch. The man approached the bar stools and plopped down in the seat next to me.
"Rough night?" I ask hoping to entertain myself with light conversation while waiting for my brother to return from his work. The man's eyes flickered to me reflecting the fire ever so slightly. His face looked tired as he asked the bartender for a shot.
"You could call it that," was all the man muttered slurping down the drink so fast I was surprised he didn't accidentally gag on the liquid. I nod not bothering to pry into the man's life. Though I could tell just from the way he held himself that he was part of the Port Mafia.
"What about you, what brings you to the bar so late. You waiting on someone?" the man asked waving the empty glass at the bartender who quickly refilled it. I watched him gulp down his second shot before answer his question.
"Hm, something like that. A friend was supposed to meet me here tonight." I say taking care not to show any true attachment to the so called 'friend.' It's better for people not to know of the relationship between me and my brother. It's better to think we don't even know each other. We are in the Port Mafia after all. Secrecy is necessary for survival.
"How long have you been waiting?" the man asked his tone already becoming slightly slurred from the alcohol. I narrow my eyes at him.
"None of your concern." I say keeping my voice calm and even. He senses the danger in my tone and backs down.
For the next half hour or so me and the man converse about simple things. Each of us not revealing too much about ourselves. I learned that he was nothing special. A simple pawn for the Port Mafia to use when needed. Someone like me.
The hope of my brother showing up at the bar had dwindles enough for me to call it quits for the night. I had no real idea as to when he would show his face, or if he had even remembered to stop by. Reaching within my pocket for paper and pen I scribble a short note for my brother. handing the note to the bartender as I excused myself.
"If a man with black and white hair from the command unit enters hand this to him."
Street lights guided me back to the apartment my brother and I shared. A part of me seemed to still hold out hope that Ryunosuke would be sitting on the couch when I entered the living room. However, to my dismay he was nowhere to be found. Sighing in defeat I take myself my bedroom undressing from my work clothes. I slip on silky night wear and crawl into bed.
The next morning I woke before the sun. Due to my line of work in the Port Mafia my sleep schedule was permanently set to an irresponsible high schoolers. Falling asleep at ungodly hours and waking up only a few after. I fight my hair, ripping a brush through the rough tangles that were created through the tossing and turning of my sleep. Exiting my room I head down the hallway to check if my brother was home. Peeking into his room I was once again disappointed to find that he was nowhere to be found.
Shutting his door I trudge my way to the living room which was connected to the kitchen. My stomach had already proven to me how hungry I was with it's not so subtle growls. I reached into the fridge taking out leftover miso soup. Pouring the remaining soup into a bowl I stick the dish into the microwave I wait impatiently. My phone buzzed at the kitchen table where I had left it the night before. Grabbing the bowl from the microwave I take my breakfast to the table checking the message.
Nakahara Chuuya: Gin, have you seen your brother?
Although the message didn't convey a panicked or worried tone. A sense of worry entered my mind. Had something happened to Ryunosuke last night? Had he been in trouble while I was sleeping? Forgetting about my miso soup I tried to call my brother. The ringing went on and on without anyone picking the phone up. The worry soon turned to dread as I then searched for Higuchi's number in my list of contacts. Lucky for me, the blonde haired woman picked up almost immediately.
"Gin, is there anything I can do to help you?" the young woman asked.
"Yes there is, have you heard from Akutagawa recently?" I asked thinking back to the last time I had seen him which had been at least two nights ago. A short pause caused my heart to pound in my chest.
"He's using the restroom right now. The mission took longer then expected. We should be arriving home later tonight." She responds. I let out a breath I didn't know I had been holding. After thanking Higuchi I hung up and set my phone aside completely forgetting about Nakahara's message about my brother.
The rest of the day was relatively calm and uneventful. I spent my morning in the apartment relaxing. After cleaning the bowl from breakfast and setting it out to dry I checked the fridge. Getting dressed in clothing fit for a civilian of Yokohama, I made a quick list of all the groceries we had run low on. After slipping on my shoes and gathering the bags necessary for a grocery outing I left. About midway through my shopping a message distracted me. The black Lizard unit was to assassinate a troublesome thief by the end of the day. I sped up my shopping and rushed back home. The moment I finished unpacking the groceries a call came in from Tachihara. Rolling my eyes a little I click 'talk.'
"Ayo Gin, stop slacking and get on the job. Once we're done Hirotsu said he'd pay for our drinks tonight. So stop wasting time and let's get the show on the road." Tachihara barked.
"I don't drink remember?" I say taking the phone with me into my room where I gather my ratty Mafia outfit. I put Tachihara on speaker phone while I got changed into my long black coat. The young man rambled on for another five minutes as I once again got ready to leave the apartment.
"I'm leaving now. Send me the location." I say locking the door to the apartment and heading down the elevator to the ground floor.
