sanya's pov
"Verity!" The familiar voice of Aamani's called out from the middle of the school dining hall. My eyes darted to where she stood waving at me. "Hey," I greeted her as I approached her. It was Tuesday afternoon — specifically lunchtime, and I had tediously been enduring the school day by the second alone. It was only the second day. If I had to continue this same exact routine for a whole month I would kill someone. Maybe I'll kill the next informant Victor sends here and send their body in pieces back to him.
"Come sit with me and some friends," she happily smiled. I followed her as she led me to one of the dining hall tables and patted a seat beside her. Maeve was present as well as a few other unfamiliar faces I paid no attention to.
"Verity, there's rumor already that you're dating Mattia Bernardi," Maeve grinned at me, a fork injected into a piece of cantaloupe in her hand. Oh God. I really did not need to deal with this as well. I should've just stayed inside the library. I chuckled and my expression quickly died. "No, we're not."
"Don't lie to us! We need the deets," another girl chimed in, her elbows on the table, leaning toward me. "I'm not lying. There's really nothing going on between us. If anything, why would I want to associate myself with that horny gremlin?"
Maeve and Aamani blurted out laughing and another girl joined in. "How could you say that about THEE MATTIA BERNARDI?" Her voice was genuinely serious and concerned I almost let out a laugh. "There's nothing special to him," I shrugged, except for him being the son of one of the biggest Mafias in the world and that he's currently in hiding from European authorities and organizations.
The girl blinked in disbelief at me. "Especially in front of Delaney. She'll be on your ass soon," Maeve added. She already did, and now I was going to make her life hell soon. I didn't tell them though but only questioned out of curiosity about her relationship with him. "How come?"
"She's a crazy ex who always gets what she wants," Aamani mumbled. Hmph, we'll see about that. I just have to be discreet with whatever I do otherwise I can backfire the entire mission. The end of lunchtime bell rang and we quickly left the dining hall and into our fifth-period classes where I sat beside Mattia, except he didn't show up, and it was only Tuesday. What else could he possibly be doing? The school day quickly ended in a blur and I returned back to my dorm room. I slid a chair underneath the door handle and quickly checked the burner phone.
V: There's a blue Dodge waiting by the front gate. You have 15 minutes.
Finally something productive. I hurriedly grabbed a few small gadgets, my karambit, a handgun, and my black tech suit, stuffing them all into my school bag. The doorknob rattled and I swiftly put the chair back into its original spot. "Hm, the door wouldn't work for a sec," Aamani said as she entered. "That's weird," I mumbled.
"Where you off to?" She asked, noticing my hurried manner and backpack on. "I'm heading off to see a family friend who lives in the area," I lied. "Oh cool. Need a ride?" She offered as she placed her bag down. I shook my head. "It's okay I'm getting picked up. Thank you though," I smiled and left the room before she could continue.
15 minutes and this enormous campus was not in my favor. I picked up my pace upon reaching the front gates and scanned the sidewalks for a blue Dodge until my eyes landed on it. A shiny blue with darkly tinted windows throughout. I opened the door and got into the passenger seat. An expressionless man sat in the driver's seat wearing a tuxedo and black shades. "Sanya," he nodded at my appearance. I smiled at my name. He turned up the car speaker and the screen connected to Victor's phone.
