"Fay...send him away. I don't want to speak with him..." I said, holding a hand to my throbbing head.
"You can hardly stand, and you broke your hand two days ago trying to open a door. You'll be seen and say nothing more about it." She replied frustratedly.
I sighed and wondered why she couldn't just wait a little longer.
There wasn't much time left now, and there was still so much to do. It shouldn't be astonishing to me that she would worry, but I'd never really thought about how she would react if this time ever came. After all, it was never supposed to happen, but she was wilder than I could have anticipated and so pushed me much harder than I expected she would. But I couldn't tell her that. I couldn't tell her anything, not yet.
The medic entered the room moments later, though I paid him little attention and didn't even consider doing what he asked of me as he conducted his examination. I already knew what was wrong with me, but even if I didn't, my current state would have turned what was a routine thing into a feat of strength had I been able to accomplish it. The buzzing in my ears was quite loud now, and the headaches were constant, so focusing on anything was quite burdensome. I had no strength nor desire to eat or drink, so I mostly slept or spent my time lying down. But even though I lacked the hunger for food, that did not mean I didn't hunger. It was just a different thing that I wanted.
"Fay, my darling, stay with me..." I called out softly after the medic took his leave.
"I'm here." She responded in a quivering voice that I knew meant she was about to cry, "I'm here..."
