Ever since the 2nd trial was over, things somehow got worse at the school. People were already wary of each other, but after one of the most trustable people in the cast was outed as a manipulator, things just went downhill. It was getting less common to see people out and about talking. Hell, only a few people would show up to meals and most of them were only there for the food. One of the only duos that stuck by each other after the trial was Charles and Whit.
Although Charles and Whit were an unlikely pair, they had grown to tolerate, and even like each other's company in the killing game. Them being together all the time even made it unlikely for one of them to get killed which was an added bonus for the two.
As the days went by slowly, people were getting even more anxious. Even Charles was internally worried about him or Whit being the next victim. It didn't help that he would constantly get irrational, gruesome thoughts stuck in his head. They would play over, and over, and over again. Talking with Whit seemed to worsen the thoughts considering most of them involved him.
It was true agony having thoughts of someone you adore being a murder while they were standing in front of you smiling. Charles thought that if he mentioned any of these thoughts to Whit, he would get angry at him for even thinking about it. It felt that as the days went on, he was starting to be wary around Whit. Whit, his own friend, could turn around and do exactly what Xander or David or even Nico did. It was a horrifying thought.
Charles really thought his sudden slight isolation around his friend would go unnoticed, but David wasn't stupid when it came to peoples' feelings. On the morning of day 3 since trial 2, Charles groggily got out of bed and made his way to the cafeteria. Upon arriving by himself, he noticed David walking towards him. David just being there, alive, made many sick to their stomach.
David approached him and looked directly at him. Them being the same height made the eye contact even more unnerving. Without wasting a second, David quietly spoke up. Not a whisper, but not loud enough for the others in the room to hear.
"So Charles, where's your little friend? I noticed something was a little off between you two."
Charles crossed his arms and looked away, "This has nothing to do with you, and no, nothing is "off" between me and Whit."
"Hm. . .alright! You know, it would reallyyyy suck if Whit- well, nevermind. I better go before Eden throws a hissy fit."
". . .If Whit what. . ?"
Charles really hated continuing a conversation with a known manipulator, but his paranoia got to him. Of course, Charles refused to call it "paranoia", rather, he was just asking about what David knew about Whit to. . .gather evidence and make sure his friend is okay!
"Huh? Well I was just thinking about what happened between Teruko and Xander, and well, you and Whit are quite close. He has said some questionable things as well, his "intuition" seems to keep being weird coincidences, but you probably shouldn't take my word for it!"
He looked at Charles with a vicious smile and with that, he was off. That last part was true, he wasn't going to take a manipulator's word for it. I mean, Whit is his friend. His annoying yet still charismatic friend. He wouldn't- no, couldn't do anything to harm him or the others.
His hands were shaking. Why were they shaking? Why was everything getting distorted? Whit's not a murderer. All he could make out was Eden worriedly looking at him. Without really processing it, he walked to his room and locked the door. Charles was resisting the urge to scramble his brains to make the horrible thoughts and pictures in his mind go away.
He stayed there for hours. Hours upon hours went by. Hours of silence. Hours of pacing and trying to think about something, anything else. Charles hadn't eaten all day, but his surroundings were already distracting from his hunger. He was starting to get tired of pacing when he heard a knock.
