I sat up in my seat and stared at the chalkboard in front of me in an attempt to pay attention. I sat there listening to Mrs. Margaret continue the lesson on the effect of substances on the brain. The chalkboard was covered top to bottom with the classic white chalk. Every inch of it had diagrams and notes that went off the board. Everyone had extremely detailed notes on their papers that stretched from one to two pages. I slowly dozed off into a slumber. I was awoken from my nap by the bell that announced that it's time for our lunch. I groggily got up from my chair and watched as Mrs. Margaret wiped all of the chalk off the board making a cloud of memorizing white dust. I slowly exited the room behind the clusters of people with their lunch boxes and full notebooks. In the hall the mostly single file line slowly separated into groups of four or five each with their own conversations.
As I stood there watching the students walk towards the cafeteria, I heard a familiar voice yell out from behind me. "Sara! Over here!" My friend, Lura, shouted at me from the back of the hall. Lura and four of my other friends were standing in a group each with their bags full of stuff. I swiftly walked over to the group of girls. "Damn, they really keep you guys longer in that psychology class." said Marie with her slightly bitter attitude. "Yeah, the bell in there is delayed by five minutes." I replied. After giving me a nod of acknowledgement Sandra made a statement, "Alright, they told us that we have until 1:00 to get back to class." Sandra announced to the group. "So, 2 hours and 23 minutes." Jane said, glancing down at her watch. "Well I still have to go to my locker." I stated. "Then go, girl!" Lura said, shoving me in the direction of my locker.
I used to hate it when no one noticed me in school but now I hate the fact that people can't stop noticing me. I was constantly being stopped by people in the halls asking if I'm ok and wishing me good luck on finding Ashlee. I even get the occasional cheerleader or jock to notice me, but they usually just make fun of my situation. I'm slowly starting to wish that I was the one taken that night instead of Ashlee.
My trip to my locker took longer than expected due to the many students stopping me in the hall to give me their condolences. I honestly thought it was kind of funny that just 3 days ago these people had no clue who I was. Now they all know my name, my family, my sister, and everything about my life. Gossip can spread fast in high schools. Except this isn't gossip this is true.
After my long trip to my locker which resulted in me grabbing my food and about 30 pointless conversations with people who probably don't even care about my sister. I walked back to my friends. "Sara! What took you so long, girl?" Asked Lura as I approached the group. "It's nothing." I shrugged off the question "Let's go." As we walked out the door my friends fought off the lingering students that were attempting to have a conversation with me. "It's going to be a long day, huh?" I asked as we got on the community bus.
