The inn's food was awful, but Eragon said the beer was delicious. Eragon and Brom drank and drank, while Ruth sat beside the two of them making sure they wouldn't loosen their tongues. She spent many hours just sitting there, listening to their loud conversations. She was listening to Eragon laugh continuously about a joke that Brom said. While she was doing so a man grabbed her from behind, she yelped as he dragged her from her chair. She stood and turned around, to see an old man. Disgusted, she yelled
"Let go of me!"The man simply chortled drunkenly and then tried to grope her when someone pushed the male off her. Confused, Ruth looked at her helper to see it was Brom, she was thankful he was sober enough to notice it. Once the man left -at Ruth's joy- Brom walked to Ruth and whispered
"We'll meet you in the room, sorry about him. Stay safe"
"It's fine I could handle it but thank you, thank you very much" she replied, with a quick smile she ran back to the room. She sat on her bed, waiting for the boys to return, thinking over what she had joined and the uncomfortable incident.
Why am I here? She wondered Why have I stayed with this old man and this reckless, young Dragon Rider? She kept pondering when the door slammed open. Eragon and Brom stumbled in, Brom went straight to his bed and clumsily climbed into it and fell asleep almost instantly. Eragon looked at Ruth
"Are you okay?" he slurred
"I'm fine" she said "Though you won't be tomorrow morning, which I can't wait to see. I won't envy you"
"Brom will; he drank twice more" Eragon said, unrolling his blankets, before he fell asleep he said "At least I didn't kill anybody"
"You don't know the story" she rolled her eyes, she knew Eragon would want to know
"Can you tell me the story?" Eragon said so softly Ruth could barely hear him
"No, goodnight Eragon" she whispered back, rolling into her bed.
Ruth woke up to see Eragon lying on the floor with his hand on his head."How are we feeling?" Ruth asked smugly, a grin on her face
Eragon groaned and wet his lips "I'm great" he croaked, his throat must've been sore."Yep, you look great and seem great" she said confidently, he glared at her in return.
Brom grunted and rolled out of bed, he walked over to the basin and washed his face with cold water. After they were all changed Brom got up and left.
"Where are you going?" Eragon & Ruth said in unison, following him down the dark hallway.
"For Eragon and I to recover"
They reached the bar again, where Eragon and Brom drank hot tea and ice cold water then washed it down with brandy. Ruth just stuck to drinking water and amused herself by watching the man who groped her yesterday collapse and stumble around the room. When they returned to the room Brom and Eragon functioned much better.
Brom belted on his sword and smoothed out the wrinkles of his robe.
"The first thing we need to do is ask some discreet questions. I want to find out where the Seither oil was taken in Dras-Leona and where it was transported from there. Soldiers and workmen who are transporting it, they'll be the ones to ask."They left the Golden Globes and searched for warehouses where the Seither oil may have been delivered. Near the centre of Dras-Leona, the streets began to slant upwards toward a palace of polished granite. It was built on a rise so it would tower over every building except the cathedral. The courtyard was a mosaic of mother-of pearl, and parts of the walls were inlaid with gold. Black statues stood in alcoves, with sticks of incense smoking in their cold hands. Soldiers stationed every four yards watched passersby keenly.
"Who lives there?" Eragon asked in awe
"Marcus Tablor, ruler of this city. He only answers to the king or his own conscience, which hasn't been very active lately." said Brom. They walked around the palace, looking at the gated, ornate houses that surrounded it. By midday they had learned nothing useful, so they stopped for lunch.
"This city is too vast for to comb it together" said Brom "Search with Ruth for it'll be too dangerous for her to search on her own"
Ruth glared at Brom, who caught her eye but ignored her
"Meet me at the Golden Globe at dusk." He glowered at Eragon from under his bushy eyebrows
"Don't do anything stupid." He changed his gaze to Ruth "And you, stop Eragon from doing anything stupid and stay safe"
"I won't do anything stupid" Eragon promised. Brom handed them some coins, then strode away in different directions.
Throughout the rest of the day the pair talked with shopkeepers and workers, they both tried to be as charming and pleasant as they could. Their questions lead them to the other side of the city and then back. No one seemed to know about the oil. Wherever she went the cathedral towered over her. It unsettled her and when she mentioned it to Eragon he agreed it unsettled him too. She got to know Eragon a little more too and he learnt more about her too.
