Frankie took to wearing sunglasses to not cause those around him to fall under his piercing gaze. Being looked at by those golden eyes was disturbing if he did it for too long. They didn't interfere with his vision and his sight wasn't affected by darkness anymore either.
After the floating event the previous day Frankie had been practicing with his new abilities. His power had jumped up again and he had the ability to, he called it loading, three runes at once and activate them in rapid succession.
Frankie and Kyle were practicing their runes in the yard Andre and Janice were watching from the patio. "Kyle, I want you to hit me with a shove rune. I want to try something."
"Umm, you sure kid? I don't want to hurt you or anything." Kyle asked.
"Yeah, I got this, just go low end and knock me towards the summoning building." Frankie said.
Kyle loaded up a shove rune and launched it at Frankie, at the last second, before it hit him, Frankie waved his arm and the rune dissipated with a light puff of air.
"What in the absolute hell was that?" asked Andre in astoundment as he stood up.
"I can see the parts of the runes. I noticed it while we were practicing. I see it coming and I can undo the lines of it as I do for the runes I make in the air." Frankie replied.
"Once more for the folks in the back, parrying or dispelling a spell in motion is impossible. The magic is already going. Dispelling stuff on an object is doable, we do that all the time, but not what you just did. I mean theoretically if two mages cast the same spell at the same time at each other, and they hit, they could cancel each other out, but that's just theory. Or maybe if you put a dispel rune up as a shield. But unweaving a spell in motion? I wouldn't believe it if I hadn't seen it." Said, Kyle.
"OK Kyle, I want you to ice-spike me. A very small spike if you please, and aim for something nonvital. I have a theory." Frankie's eyes started glowing from behind the sunglasses.
"Sure, at this point why not." Said, Kyle. He prepared a small ice spike and turned it loose, almost faster than the eye could see, Frankie stepped to the side and grabbed the spike out of the air, and tossed it into the ground where it stuck.
"OK, what the hell was that?" said Andre.
"I watched him form the spell and I could tell it was a spike. I recognized the rune, as it was forming. Then I got out of the way and grabbed it. It was like it was moving at half speed or something."
"OK, what spell am I forming?" asked Andre as he started to trace a rune.
He was halfway through when Frankie said, "That's a binder," Frankie waved his hand and the partial rune fell apart, "and now it's not."
"Holy crap kid. That's... I'm not sure what the hell that is." Said Andre in stunned amazement.
"I think so long as I can see it coming, I can stop most spells," Frankie stated.
They spent the rest of the afternoon trying spells to see what he could and couldn't do. If it was an energy effect, like a binder, or a shove, he could dispel it in motion or before it was finished casting.
Physical spells like spikes, he could dispel as they were being cast or dodge if they were already in motion.
He couldn't handle two spells at once, he wasn't fast enough to counter both, but he could pick which of the two was the more dangerous.
The last thing they tested was if he could dispel a shield. He could, but on top of that, he could walk through one like it wasn't there.
"You're a juggernaut kid. You're almost unstoppable." Said, Kyle.
