I toss and turn in my bed. Tomorrow is my 18th birthday. All I want is to watch movies with my boyfriend Aidan, the only problem with that is that he's up on the other side of Ohio visiting with his mom. He won't be back for at least another week. I let out a sigh and shrug, I decide to get up and get ready for school. Slowly struggling to get out of my bed, rubbing my eyes of the remainder of my restlessness. I walk to my dresser and get some clothes out, then continue to the bathroom, turning the faucets. The water streams down from the shower head, I slowly strip down to nothing, looking at myself in the mirror. pulling the curtain back I climb into the shower and start to scrub my body clean, rinsing my hair from the shampoo and conditioner. Water falls onto my face and all around my body. The warmth is like a blanket, or Aidans arms around me. I grab a towel and dry my damp body. I wrap my hair in a towel and get dressed. My medium length bright red hair is always wavy when it dries, so I decide to let do whatever it wants. I put my makeup on and go back to my room. Turning on my TV and DVD player I put my favorite movie in. I look at my clock. 5:19 am... I just turned 18. Reaching for the remote to press play I hear my grandmother get up. "MiKayla?" she asks. "Yes nana?" I reply. Walking into my room she continues by asking me "why are you up so early? And watching this movie?" I laugh and say "this is my favorite movie, don't judge me!" She laughs and walks away getting ready for work. An hour passes and she walks out of the door leaving. I check the schools website one last time. "No school due to the extreme cold." I'll go tell Alec. I walk out the door and head to my neighbors. Knocking on the door I see someone look out threw the curtain. "Alec's?" "It's me, MiKayla... I just wanted to tell you that school was cancelled." I turn to walk away when I hear the door unlock and open. He grabs my arms and pushes me as far away from him as he can. "What are you doing?!" I spat out angrily. "You're not one of them?" He stutters out. "One of what?" I ask. "Those monsters on the news." He replies. "Monsters on the news?" I ask myself. I push my way past him and sit on the floor looking at the TV. Everything is in total chaos. Sirens wailing and people screaming. I look at Alec. "It hasn't hit West Virginia or Ohio yet, right?" I ask desperately. "I don't think so" He replies. I get up and run back to the house. Shouting to him I say "Grab all the supplies, weapons, canned food, anything that will come in handy!" I swing my door open and grab my phone dialing his number as fast as I can. I put the phone to my ear as it slowly rings. One ring... two rings...three rings... Suddenly I hear a sleepy voice. Aidan asks "Hello. MiKayla?" "What's up?" I cry and sputter out "Aidan, now! You need to come back now!" "Calm down," he says. "What's wrong?" He asks again. "Zombies, Aidan I need you! Aidan please come back now!" I hastily grab a backpack and start shoving things that I will need in it. Just as I'm about to tell him to turn on the news I hear Aidan say "mom?" "Mom what's wrong?" I hear a scream and Aidan struggling, it sounds like he's fighting back. "Shit!" I say to myself. I begin to cry and Alec's runs over. "I have everything ready!" "Where are we going?" he asks. I wipe away my tears. Mumbling I say "I don't know...uh... to the store, we can stock up more, My grandpa owns a store in Reedy." I look down at my phone and press end call. I grab the rest of my stuff and throw it into Alec's truck. "We have to stop at Savannahs!" I shout. I call my grandmother, my mom, and my sisters. Nothing, no answers. We drive warily down the road, half a mile to go and we will be at Savannahs. We finally arrive at her house, no vehicles outside. They must've already left. I run over and knock on the door to be sure. "Savannah?" I scream. No answer. I look through the windows, no one is home. I turn to walk away and hear Alec's scream "Look out!" I turn looking at her neighbor's house... They're dead. This is why they left already, I run to the truck and grab my screwdriver. I run back over and hastily shove it into the neighbor's temple as hard as I can. "I never liked this bitch anyway." I spat. Returning back to the truck, we begin our journey towards the store. As we make our way into town we see people running and screaming, begging for help. All we can do is ignore it. I call Savannah. One ring... two rings... "Hello? Dude you're okay?" She shouts. "Yeah I'm fine. Alec and I are setting up at the store out of town, meet us there." I smile because I know she's safe. I hang up and look out the window. We finally get to the store out of the town. "It doesn't look like people have made it this far yet." Alec says. I look around the outside. "I have an extra pair of keys, to think Hershel was thinking about selling this place." "He always hated me." I admit. We slowly walk inside. It's too quiet. Something is bound to happen. This place is too big for us to keep looking around right now. I open up the garage door for the buggies, Alec drives his truck in. We start barricading the doors. "Hey, I'll be right back." "I just have to call them again." I say. I walk over towards the cash registers and call them all again. My mom... no answer. My sisters... no answers. My nana... someone picks up. "hh- hello?" a squeaky voice asks. "Um- hello, my name is MiKayla, is there an older woman around?" I continue "She has short blonde hair, a waitress at "The downtowner"." The squeaky voice says "yes... but she's one of the monsters!" I bite my lip and ask "are you okay?" "Please help me." The squeaky voice cries out. I look back at Jon. I grab the sharpest thing in my backpack and run out of the door that was not yet barricaded. I ask the voice where they are. "The restaurant! Please hurry." The voice manages to say before the phones cut off. Alec runs out after me. "What are you doing? He shouts. I turn around with tears in my eyes from hearing that I have lost my grandmother, my aunt, my uncle, my mom, my siblings, and my boyfriend. "There is a kid locked up at the restaurant hiding from them. I have to help him. You stay here in case someone comes in need of help." I say. I run over to the closest house and see a green jeep covered in zombie response team details, normally I would chuckle at the irony, but I ignore it and get in. I hotwire it and put it in reverse. Thinking about what is about to come to my little town.
