Sofia's POV:

As soon as I got home that evening, I began getting ready for the ball.

It was a masquerade, so I focused mostly on my attire rather than my face. The dress I chose was an emerald green, and to match it, I wore a beautiful black mask—small enough to show my features, but large enough to conceal my eyes and nose.

Once I was ready, I walked over to Flower's house to see if he was finished, and together we took a carriage to the Lyons' estate.

The house looked stunning. I couldn't believe how many people had gathered in the same place at once.

I spotted William almost immediately and made my way over to speak with him. Surprisingly, he didn't recognise me at first, so I removed my mask. Still, he remained the only friend I had in Flower's world of lords and ladies.

Technically, I am a lady as well—but it doesn't always feel that way. Sometimes it feels like I'm in a different world entirely, like they don't want me here. So, it's comforting to have a friend like William, someone who, like me, seems not to belong in this glittering crowd.

I was deep in conversation with Flower when I noticed her from across the room. I couldn't help but gravitate towards her—only to realise she was already walking in our direction.

"Enola? What are you doing here? I didn't know you knew Will."

"Sofia, it's good to see you again! In fact, this is perfect timing—I need to borrow your brother for something. Just for a moment, if you don't mind?"

"Oh, no, not at a—"

But she was already gone, whisking my brother away with her. And there I was, left standing alone in the corner like a complete fool. How convenient.

I decided to look around and eventually filled my dance card, hoping to pass the time. I danced with two strangers before noticing Will dancing with Enola.

For some reason, that caught my interest. I just had to know why. I tried to lip-read, but all I caught was a time and place.

So I waited. And when the time came, I followed Enola into a private room—unaware that my brother had the same idea.

"What are you two doing in here? And why were you whispering with Will?"

"Sofia, lovely of you to join us," Enola said, exasperated. "But you must leave. I'll explain everything later."

"Is this about that case? Because, really, we could help—if you'd just let us."

"Yes, yes, Tewksbury, I know. But you must go. Now. Before he gets here."

"He gets here?" I echoed.

I saw my brother's face pale a few shades, and instantly I knew we had to leave. But before I could say a word, Will walked in.

"Lord Tewksbury?"

He stood awkwardly in the doorway, and I couldn't help but feel bad—perhaps we'd just ruined Enola's best chance at solving the case she was already struggling with.

"We should go, Flower. Come on." I tried to tug him away, but he wouldn't budge. Honestly, I think he's put on a few pounds.

"No. What is going on?"

Just as Enola opened her mouth to answer, a group of officers stormed into the room, demanding her arrest.

You can imagine the look on my face when I realised what was happening. I couldn't stop myself—I followed as she was escorted out.

"Wait! Sofia, come back!" Flower called after me.

"It's fine, brother. I'm just going to see if I can help. Go home and wait for me there."

He looked like he wanted to argue but instead sighed, defeated, and let me go.

I had to find out what was going on—who had framed Enola? Because there was no way she'd done what they were accusing her of.

I managed to find a carriage and made a beeline for the police station. I arrived just in time to see Enola being taken away to her cell.

She turned to me and said, "Explain to your brother—whatever you think you know."

I knew I should go back to him. But something told me to stay. Just in case.
