It was your usual spring morning in Brisbane, Australia. The sun beamed down, warm on my fur coat. The grass still covered in the morning dew. I had just returned home after dropping my two daughters, Bluey and Bingo, off at school. My wife Chili had already left for work so I set off for the back yard to do my morning exercise and yard work.
After playing one-person fetch, I made my way to the garden shed to get out my lawn mower. As my hand reaches the door latch, a familiar sound arises. Just over the garden fence, I can hear our neighbor mowing their lawn as well. I look around in search of who else may be doing the same morning duties as me. Alas, just behind our backyard was another dad in his yard. But not just any dad; Lucky's dad. I always found myself infatuated by that man. I could never tell if I wanted to be him, or if I wanted to be with him. But that never mattered, as I knew I had the best wife and children a dog could ask for.
I turn around to mind my own business until-
"Heya Bandit. You mowing the lawn too?" He called out to me.
"Oh... yeah. You know a dog's lawn is the perfect reflection of his personality,"
Why the fuck did I say that. You could tell he was confused too, but still trying to be polite.
"Yeah, well, great minds think alike,"
I mowed the lawn as fast as I could and quickly returned inside. After making my way into the house, I froze. Lately I've felt strange. Ever since the barbecue a couple weeks ago when Lucky's Dad's tail briefly brushed against mine as we were co-grilling hot dogs, I've felt differently towards him. It was a feeling I had never even felt with Chili. I've tried so hard to ignore it but every night I lie awake in bed thinking about him, while my wife sleeps peacefully beside me.
The next day was the same old story. I dropped the girls off at school, Chili had already gone to work, and I was headed to the back yard to do my morning exercise and yard work. But today however, I watered the plants. As I whistled away while watering the petunias, I heard a familiar voice harmonizing with my whistles. Just my luck, it was him. I peeped over the fence and saw Lucky's Dad, only today he was chopping out a tree stump. I needed to get back to my work but I couldn't look away. His sweat made his coat glimmer in the sun. I was so mesmerized. By the time I could snap out of it, he was already calling over to me. I could feel my heart pounding thru my chest.
"Hey Bandit," he said as he approached the fence "Are you doing anything tomorrow? I was going to go to the cricket game with my brother but he got called into work and I have an extra ticket. Would you want to come with me?"
I was frozen in my tracks. I was so nervous I almost didn't know what to say.
"Yeah I can totally come" I said flustered.
"Perfect, I'll pick you up tomorrow at noon"
"Thanks Lucky's Dad, I'll see you then"
"Please, call me Pat" he said with a cheeky smirk.
I almost threw up all over my petunias I was so smitten.
TO BE CONTINUED (or maybe not, idk)
