I took a long sip from my nearly empty Monster can and quickly sat it back down on my desk as I got back to tapping away at my keys. I was halfway through a generator when I saw her.
"It's Huntress. She's over by shack," I casually called into my headset, trying to keep out of sight as I finished up gen.
"Noted," Said the familiar voice of Drake, one of my best friends since high school.
"Hey, y/n, you do know what time it is, right?" Parker asked, in a weirdly concerned voice.
"Yeah, it's 9:32," I said, glancing at the clock on my nightstand.
He sighed. "You forgot to change your clock again, didn't you?..It's 10:32."
"What!?!?" I yelled jumping to my feet. "Shit, if I'm late again, Eliza is gonna have my head! I gotta go guys," I said, quickly shutting down my pc and abruptly ending the discord call I was on with my friends.
I rushed around my room, quickly putting on my red work shirt and the black jeans I wore the last two nights I've worked. I grabbed my keys as I ran out of my room, down the hall, and out the front door. I got into my car, throwing it in reverse and pulling out of my driveway. I rushed to the station, not even bothering to put my music on.
------------
I slammed on my brake as some idiot in an old dirty white hoodie ran into the road, my car barely stopping right in front of the guy."WHAT THE HELL!!! WATCH WHERE THE HELL YOU'RE GOING YOU FUCKING MORON!!" I yelled, honking my horn.
The guy just stared at me but I couldn't make out much of his face. He had a face mask on and his long black hair was covering his eyes. I tensed as he went to take a step towards my car starting to pull something from his pocket. He stopped as police sirens went off in the distance and took off, running off the road and into an alleyway.
"That was weird," I murmured while driving off, down the road.
------------
I rushed into the gas station as soon as I put my car in park, nearly forgetting to lock it. As I came out of the back after clocking in, I saw Eliza standing there, arms crossed and face sour.
"You're late."
"Yeah I know I'm sorry...I forgot to set my clocks and then this guy just ran ou-"
"I don't care about your excuses, y/n. Just hurry up and get on the register so I can go home."
"Yes ma'am," I say, rolling my eyes as I walk past her, toward the counter. She quickly counted down the moment I took down the closed lane sign and clocked out.
"Alright, I'm out of here," She said, heading for the door. "Oh, and don't forget to clean the coffee machine. I want this place spotless and I will be asking Amber in the morning to see what you got done."
"Got it," I said, giving her a thumbs up and my best customer service smile.
She nodded and left, rolling her eyes at me.
"Fucking bitch," I murmured, my smile dropping as I grabbed the broom from the back and started to sweep.
---------------
A couple hours later I was wiping down the counters at the coffee bar, when I heard the doorbell chime. I turned to see the guy I had almost hit on my way here. He still had his hood up and his mask on, but this time my e/c orbs made contact with his bright green ones. I might have found them pretty, if it wasn't for the sense of overwhelming dread I felt in that brief moment our eyes met.
I quickly made my way back behind the counter, trying to ignore the feeling as I watched the guy walk around the store. After a few minutes he came up to the counter and placed down two Monster Javas, two classic Monsters, a couple of hotdogs loaded with chill and cheese, and a couple candy bars. I felt this guy practically staring a hole into me as I rang up his items.
"And will that be all for you today, sir?" I asked, looking toward him but making sure not to make eye contact again.
"Not quite," He said, chuckling for some reason, which made my skin crawl. "I'll also take a pack of Marlboro reds and Marlboro NXTs."
"Not a problem," I said, grabbing them and quickly adding them to his order. "Anything else?"
"Just this and that'll be it," He said, tossing a red lighter onto the counter from the display.
"Alright, your total is $34.95. Will that be cash or card?" I asked, looking up at him. He chuckled again and started to pull something from his pocket. My heart dropped for seemingly no reason as my hair stood on end watching him, but my eyes were drawn away as I heard the door chime again. A familiar face walked into the store.
"Oh hey Tim," I said, feeling a little relieved to see my neighbor, or even just a familiar face in general.
"Hey y/n..." he says not looking at me but eyeing the guy in front of the counter suspiciously as he gets in line behind him.
When I looked back at mister hoodie man, he had switched the side of his pocket he was digging in. He pulled out a wrinkled, worn, and stained $50 dollar bill, and placed it on the counter.
"Keep the change," he said, quickly grabbing a bag and shoveling his things in it, then left the store.
"Have a good night," I called as he left, before looking at Tim, who had gone and grabbed a 6-pack and came back up to the counter.
"Same as usual, Tim?" I asked, grabbing the pack of smokes off the shelf before he said anything.
"Yeah, same as usual... Hey, so, has that guy been in here before?"
"Na, but I almost hit him with my car on the way to work tonight."
"What?"
"Yeah, idiot ran out into the road. Luckily I was paying attention."
"Yeah... Lucky," he said, tucking his smokes into his pocket and picking up his beer. "Well, if he gives ya problems, let me know."
"Sure thing, Tim," I said, rolling my eyes a little as he went to leave. "Tell Brian and Toby I said hi."
"Can do," he said, waving with his free hand as he left.
