VICTORIA AMELIA THOMPSON is a 21 year old college student studying psychology in her final year in New York alongside her two best friends. Her friends invite her to a party, but due to her introverted nature she turns them down as she usually does, only for one of her best friend to die in a car accident and her once perfect life is turned upside down.
The sudden death of her best friend shakes her to the core, leaving only memories, nightmares, photos and a certain HAYDEN COLLINS behind. As Victoria is trying to navigate her emotions surrounding the funeral, she meets Hayden and sparks fly. Deciding to ignore then and blaming them on grieve she spends her summer holidays locked up in her room and blaming herself for Lily's death.
Coming to terms with Lily's death seems impossible as she dreams of her every night, covered in blood and blaming Victoria for her death. After she is convinced that Florida holds nothing but pain for her, she takes the next flight to New York, only to get burned by sparks from Hayden's touch.
As it turns out that it's not just a spark she gets from Hayden, but a whole zoo in her stomach Victoria guilty conscience eats away at her soul. Instead of warming up to the idea of love, she buries herself in books and chocolate, and wakes up covered in sweat from dreams that haunt her, leaving her with more guilt and questions.
While hiding away from the guy she believes is a forbidden fruit, Mo tells her there was no love lost between Hayden and Lily, they only provided each other with warm bodies when it suited them. Hayden knows how to say just about the right thing to get Victoria breathless, but his prey still can't give into desire, and possibly love.
To run away from pity looks she often gets from her mother and father, her guilt of enjoying her best friend's boyfriend sweet kisses, Victoria goes away to Italy to spend Christmas with the Liam, Lily's brother. It is in Bologna she comes to terms with her feelings and follows her heart in the new year.
Just before starting her internship Tori meets up with Hayden, and tells him how she feels and they seal it with a kiss. No emotion is as strong and fierce as love, with it comes arguments, tears and laughter, while visited by Hayden she reveals that she can't remember all her past and intends to go to therapy to deal with Lily's death and her past.
When Victoria visits home for her younger brother's birthday Sam, cans of worms are opened and they aren't pretty! She finds more answers than she bargained for. She finds out that Sam is not a Thompson, but her stepfather's biological child rather than adoptive as she believed, whom her mother cheated her father with, who also happens to be the reason for her parents divorcing and her dad dying.
