Test Tube had been researching social interaction, or as she called it, pure and total agony, for the last three weeks. Test Tube never had a real friend. All attempts she had made at social interaction always fell flat before she could even tell them her name.
This time, though, she decided it would be different. She had spent the last few weeks researching how she would make a friend, naming this experiment of hers "The Friendship Experiment." Although the name was quite bland, this was, to her, the most important thing she'd ever done.
After a few more hours of research, she glanced at her friendship goals, a list that she had made, mostly for fantasizing, before she went to sleep. On that list were just five things she wanted to accomplish during her new school year. She didn't really think she'd do any of the things described on it, like making an actual friend or getting to stargaze with someone. She just loved to imagine the feeling of having someone care for her in a way that nobody ever had.
Test Tube quickly fell asleep, imagining how happy she'd be with just one friend. She awakened around 2 hours before school began and started her daily routine, starting with bathing and doing 30 math problems to keep her brain sharp for the day. She then spent the rest of her time talking to the only people who cared about her voice, her parents, about the beauty of genetics.
After she realized she only had around 20 minutes before school started, she asked her parents to bring her to school and they got on the road. Test tube was a nervous wreck, knowing that, just like every past year, she'd never make a single friend this year. Test tube looked out the window, seeing kids walking to school with their friends laughing and smiling without a care in the world.
"I just wish I was someone with social skills- I'm so good at solving equations or programming apps but the moment someone says hi, I just stop functioning all of a sudden!" Her parents both glanced at her with a remorseful look on their faces.
"Testy, you shouldn't worry about making friends this year. I'm sure it's just because you spend all your time in books." Both of her parents gave out a little chuckle and then went back to being serious with her.
Her dad added, "Test tube, you shouldn't doubt for one minute that you'll make a friend, you are the smartest, most capable person I know, if our little genius of a jeebweezer can't make a friend, that's on everyone not having any taste, not you." Test tube looked at both of her parents with a slight smile, although not truly believing their words, hoped dearly that they were true.
Test tube finally arrived at school and hugged both of her parents before walking to the auditorium in which the orientation for the 10th graders would take place. She decided to sit down at the very back of the auditorium, as it was natural for her, no one would enjoy sitting next to her anyway, or so she said to herself. As the bell rang for the start of orientation, she saw a blonde girl running into the auditorium. As luck had it, the girl sat right next to Test Tube.
The girl then stared directly into Test Tube's eyes, and she did the same. This went on for about 10 seconds until the girl booped Test Tube's nose. Test Tube suddenly jumped back at the sudden touch, not being used to being touched by anyone other than her parents when they hugged her. The girl let out a small chuckle when she saw Test Tube's reaction.
"Um- well hello! My name's Test Tube. What's yours?" Test Tube visibly cringed when she said that. She had been rehearsing that for the past 2 weeks. It sounded so fake, but at least she got it all out at least semi-naturally.
"HIHIHIHI! The name's Lightbulb, but I'll allow you to call me Lighty, since you're cool!" Lightbulb said that so fast that it took Test Tube a few seconds to process what she just said. And then it hit Test Tube. She'd been called cool by a girl she only met a minute prior.
"What- me, cool?" Test Tube wanted to let out more, but this weak response was all that she could muster to let out.
"Well, obviously! You even have this cool coat on!" Lightbulb then lightly tugged on Test Tube's signature lab coat she wore as if it were just a normal coat.
"Huh. Thanks, I never had anyone notice it" Test Tube looked down at her chair with just the slightest blush on her face after the compliment.
The principal then told everyone to settle down and spoke monotonously about the school for exactly 1 hour, 58 minutes, and 41 seconds as Test Tube timed on her watch. The principal then announced that we would all be getting our schedules and told everyone to check their phones for their schedule.
As Lightbulb and Test Tube took out their phones and checked the email with the information, Lightbulb decided to look at Test Tube's phone. "Testy! Look! We have the same classes!" Lightbulb waved the phone in front of Test Tube's eyes, Test Tube barely being able to decipher what her schedule was. Test Tube then saw that every single class matched up perfectly, except for first period in which Test Tube had her biotechnology elective while Lightbulb had health.
"Omga! We'll have so much time to spend together!" Lightbulb looked at Test Tube with a slight smile, playing with her skirt as she said that. Test Tube tried to get something out of her mouth, but all she could manage to do was let out a few unintelligible words. Test Tube's "smart" appearance had completely dissipated by this point, and all that was left was a shy girl.
The first day of school was coming to an end and as Test Tube was leaving, someone tugged on her coat. "Hey, Testy!" Test Tube then turned around to see Lightbulb. "Just a question. I know we aren't friends and all that, but can I get your phone number?" Test Tube obliged and as she finished giving her phone number, Test Tube, with all her social skills, was able to mutter "..well, I consider you my friend." Lightbulb looked like she had lit up and said "Oh! Cool! Well cya around Testy!"
Test Tube sat down on a bench as she waited for her parents to pick her up from school, reminiscing about her day. She then grabbed her list and checked off making a friend. Just maybe, she thought, just maybe I'll be good friends with her. She then got a message from her phone. "HIYA!!! ITS LIGHTY!!!! :3" She looked at the message and decided from that moment on that she WOULD become friends with this girl, no matter what, and maybe this experiment would end up as a success.
