Shattered Impressions

I walked into my homeroom class and the first thing I heard is, "OMG, it's the girl that tripped!" Followed by too much laughter. I put my head down and headed to the seat in the back of the class. I noticed only one person who wasn't laughing, a boy who turned to look at me before going back to talking with his friend. Well, I assumed it was his friend.

I sat down in a seat in the back corner of the class and kept my head down until I realized that someone had sat next to me. I looked up. It's the boy who didn't laugh. He isn't looking at me and I can see that there is an airpod in his ear, partially covered by his golden brown hair. Tapping his finger in time to a beat only he can hear. I half smiled and began to dig through my bag, searching for a pencil and notebook.

"Ew, why are you sitting next to this loser?" I heard a voice ask. Looking up again, I saw a brunette girl leaning against the boy's desk. She looked at me in disgust and said, "Yeah, I'm talking about you, Loser." She put emphasis on the word loser.

"Shut up, Arianna." The boy said, taking out his airpod and popping it into the case. "Just leave her be."

"Why should I? She's a loser, literally! Everyone saw her fall!"

"So, she's just gonna be pegged as 'The Girl Who Fell?'" The boy asked.

"Exactly! Glad you get it!"

The boy rolled his eyes. "Go away, Arianna. And stop being mean to her. She's new here, you should be nice."

"I'm not being nice to someone who makes bad first impressions." Arianna huffed.

"Then just ignore her. If you leave her alone, you won't have to think of her. Plus, give it time, she might just be better than you think." Arianna rolled her eyes at his words and walked away with nothing else to say. The boy does not look at me.

She might just be better than you think. The words run through my head as a soft smile appears. Maybe this year won't be so hard after all.
