Kalani squatted down, pulling back the string of her bow and peering through the cracks of the huddled bushes. Her chestnut eyes focused on the build of a dear.

The day was still sore and the sky was still dark, however white blurs of clouds began to poke through the black sky, as stars gradually disappeared.

She narrowed her eyes and remained still and silent, trying not to startle the deer. Crouched in her position for so long, she stumbled forward slightly, which made a loud noise as she avoided falling into the bush in front. She sucked in a gasp as the deer pivoted, staring at her bush with wide eyes, stiller than a statue.

Then it was struck with an arrow. It parted its jaw and let out a sound of pain, before being impaled with another at the neck. It veered to run, but someone tore through the leaves of the trees above and tackled it, and Kalani started to her feet to see who had killed it. There was a pool of blood on the ground as a familiar face held up the neck of the, now dead, deer.

"That was my kill," she hissed as soon as she saw his face.

"Oh well, mine and Kaia's now," he smirked.

Kalani fought back the urge to pull her bowstring back and impale his head with a stone-headed arrow.

"You just beat me to it, Akamu," she defended, analysing the coarse texture of her bow.

"It didn't look like you were gonna attack anytime soon," A girl giggled, stepping out of the bushes beside Kalani: Kaia.

She rolled her eyes. "I was getting ready."

"Me and Kaia managed to do it in a swift, what, 3 seconds?" Akamu chimed in.

"That was because I distracted it," Kalani said peevishly.

"By falling into the bushes," Kaia teased. "If we weren't here to catch it, then it would've run off and that would've been a lost kill."

"Yeah, whatever," she sighed, growing irritated by her brother's friends. They treated her like a child, not that she wasn't seeing as she was 10, but they acted as if she couldn't do anything herself. Like Timote did. "Just let me catch it next time."

"Sureeee we will," Akamu said, ruffling up her hair like an older brother.

She shot him a glare and stormed through the forest, towards the other hunting grounds where it was more common to see less difficult prey.

Author's Note:
Sorry it's short, I just wanted to get this out loll. ALSO sorry for being absent for so long, there's been a LOTTT going on and I haven't really been in the fandom recently. But I found one of my old sketchbooks and like always that got me back into the fandom kinda 💪
I'll get the second chapter out really soon to make up for the short chapter!
