It was 6 days after stealing the cage from Rhinehart and all the harassment had stopped. They had a quiet week and no problems other than what could normally be attributed to random happenstance.
"I'll be honest I'm glad Rhinehart is off our butts, but I'm haunted by how scared he was. He was willing to throw himself on a sword to get that cage back." Andre said as he put the day's dishes away after dinner.
"I can't say that I'm sorry for putting him through hell, he kidnapped me and Celeste. Him losing a finger isn't equal compensation." Said Janice, "Speaking of Celeste, on a change of topics, how is she doing on magic training, Kyle?"
"Great, in the past 5 weeks she picked up three spells, she knew chill, and now she knows breeze, light, and sparkle. But she's impatient and pushing through the rune to get bigger results. So, breeze becomes a gust, the light is 1500 watt spotlight, and sparkle is a small fireworks display. It makes her spells slower to cast, it takes about 3 to 5 seconds, chill being the exception, but increases them by tenfold. I tried doing what she does and I just set off the spell. I have no clue as to how she is doing what she is doing."
"I tried it, and I can make it work, but oh holy shit. I am already off the chart with how powerful I am, but I tried using a shove rune, full power, against the ground. I left a 5-foot-deep ditch 15 feet wide and created an earthen berm. It took me two hours to fill the ditch back in using a shovel." Said Frankie.
"You could kill someone with a shove like that. I mean just outright crush them from the impact." Said, Kyle. "I mean hey we need an earth berm for testing anyways, but, just wow. If she picks up a tenth of your power, she's going to be one of the most powerful mages in the world. Also, her favorite color is cobalt blue, and all her spells have a deep blue tinge to them, which shouldn't be happening until she's much stronger and older. She's in her own class."
"Is she a danger to herself, or other kids?" asked Andre.
"No, she's got a very even temperament and I'm not going to teach her anything inherently dangerous, but if she keeps pushing things through her runes like she has been, if she ever does an ice spike it'll be more of an ice bus with a point on the end." Kyle did a minor illusion demonstrating what he was talking about. "Also, while she is even-tempered, she's also aggressively learning these spells. It's like a sport to her, not just a hobby. I could see her going into tournament casting competitions and kicking serious butt. She wants to be better than me at every turn. She's holding herself to the standard of her dad and it shows."
"Is it going to be a problem?" asked Janice.
"Oh no, she's a good kid and listens to instruction. We may have to transfer her to a mages academy at some point if she starts trying to show off at school. But I've told her that casting at school is off-limits."
"OK good." She spoke.
"Have you thought about teaching her the shield rune?" asked Andre, "As often as we come under fire having her be able to put up even a small defensive field would be helpful."
"It's on the list. I think we've got disappear, card trick, and then shield." Said Kyle as he checked his notes on his phone, "I forgot how handy some of the stage magic ones can be. Card trick, for example, doesn't need a rune to cast, just a deck of cards. If she shows the same talent at it that she has the other she'll make a hell of a card cheat." He laughed.
"That's why seers are forbidden from gambling." Said Kris, "Even one with minor seer abilities can destroy a blackjack table. I use to play blackjack with my friends. I never lost a hand, not one. Cards are just too easy to read."
"So, do we have anything bad on the horizon right now? Not trying to jinx us by asking for trouble," said Caleb, "but I want to make sure we're ready for whatever is coming."
