The loud sounds of panic and hustling woke me. My parents were rushing around the house, gathering the last necessary things. I watched the sun in awe as the light glared on my face. Waking up to a beautiful sunset is the only thing that keeps me going.

"Maya, get up and get ready; we're leaving today!" Mom yelled loud and clear.

I jumped off my bed and gathered my bag; we were only allowed one bag per person. So all the things I love couldn't fit in that one bag. I made my bed and gave my room one last look before saying goodbye. I had cleaned my room the night before; it looked so neat and tidy, almost as if it were new. A bit of sadness went through my brain, but I sucked it up and ran downstairs.

"Did you get everything you need?" Mom ushered for the 100th time.

"Yes, Mom, I brought everything that you told me to!" I reassured her.

I ran down the stairs with my bag and saw my parents peeking through the window of the door. Checking every 5 seconds if they had arrived. Suddenly, the loud sound of a helicopter surrounded the environment. The helicopter had parked in the driveway as two heavily armed soldiers started walking to the front door. Today was a windy and gloomy day; the tree's leaves had fallen off, and the sky seemed as if it had turned grey. One of the two soldiers knocked on the door loudly, and I could see the light in my parent's eyes. They opened the front door, and cool air hit my face.

"This is a family of three consisting of one adult male, one adult female, and one female offspring." The soldier said, sounding like a robot, and added, "Your family name is Cortez?"

"Yeah, that is our family," my dad answered as his voice quivered.

I could feel the nervousness coming from both of my parents as the soldiers questioned them. I followed my parents in a line; my dad was in the front and my mom was in the middle, making me the last in line. We were moving quickly, and the soldiers started to load our bags into the helicopter. From the corner of my eye, I saw a massive horde of humans walking our way. The soldiers began to shout.

My heart started racing when I realized those weren't humans; they were the undead and infected that the news was raving about. The soldiers took out a machine and placed it on my dad's forehead, as it beeped once they let him onto the copter. They did the same with my mom and let her on. Now that it was my turn, I didn't realize I was sweating so much. I quickly wiped my forehead as they placed the machine on it. A long silence later, there was no response. The silence was broken by the sound of three beeps.

The soldiers started murmuring "The girl's infected".

Those three words puzzled me. I was definitely not "infected". I gave a look at my parents; their eyes were panicked and wide open as if they had just seen a ghost.

"Mom... dad?" I whispered.

"Our daughter isn't infected!" my mother yelled.

She had a cold sweat on her face. Her eyes showed uncertainty. My dad just stood there, quiet and lost in thoughts.

"The device doesn't lie, ma'am," the soldier assured.

The crowd of infected started coming closer and closer; there was no time to think that whatever decision the soldiers were going to make was going to happen right now. The soldiers hurried onto the helicopter, leaving me on the ground. I could see the parents struggling to reach me; their screams filled the air. The copter's engine started, and soon it began to descend in the air.

I could do nothing but watch in horror and stand there in shock.

"MOM!" I screamed, "Don't leave me." Tears started to run down my face.

I could see my parents fighting to get off the helicopter, but the soldiers were holding them back. Just in a span of seconds, the copter grew smaller and smaller as it flew farther and farther.
