Alvaro and I made our way through the tunnels. It was quiet. I decided to break the silence.
"So what's the deal between you and Mateo?" I asked.
"What do mean?" Said Alvaro.
"I see the way Mateo acts around you. He has this 'pained' look. " I answered. Alvaro chuckled.
"Well, Mateo and I weren't always the best of friends to be honest." Said Alvaro. I looked at Alvaro as he turned to look at me.
"It happened years ago, when Mateo and I were 17. Our parents used to do business a lot together and we were always with one another. He was like my brother." Alvaro stated.
"So what happened?" I questioned curiously.
"I was a rebellious teen back then. I did all sorts of heists for gang leaders in Panama. One day we were visiting Mateo and his parents. I decided to do a job out in LA and Mateo tagged along which was delivering a package to a client. Once we arrived and when I was about to deliver the package, the authorities ambushed the client and including us. My adrenaline kicked in quick that I ran and hid as fast as I could, not even giving it a second thought. Long story short, Mateo was caught, but I was not." Said Alvaro.
I gave Alvaro a concerning look.
"Basically Mateo could've snitched on me, but he didn't. And he did time." He continued.
"What? How long was he in for?" I gasped.
"Well the judge was looking for 10 years, but the lawyer got him 4." He answered.
I was in complete and utter shock. How come Mateo has never mentioned this to me? What still confused me was why he was mad at Alvaro?
"Wow. But that still doesn't explain as to why he seems so annoyed with you?" I said.
Alvaro signed. "I called and visited him whenever I came to LA the first 2 months, but after seeing how miserable he was behind that glass, the guilt was killing me. I stopped coming around, I stopped calling him. I was ashamed and embarrassed because if I just spoke the truth rather than allowing him to take the blame, then it would've been me instead of him behind that glass for 4 years." He explained.
I kept quiet. I would honestly be mad too if I was in Mateo's shoes. As we reached our destination, we were thrown off guard by 5 men who were blocking the concrete wall. My eyes grew wide as they spotted us.
"HEY!" yelled one of the men. They took out their guns and started shooting. We managed to take cover while shooting back. I tried shooting again this time realizing I was out of bullets. Alvaro looked at me and I looked at him showing him that my clip was empty.
Alvaro ran and charged at one of the men and began to fight them while I followed closely behind. One of the men grabbed me and I swiftly turned around punching him in the face. The man then bounced back and grabbed me at the back of my head, gripping a fistful of my hair. While another man kicked the back of my knee which made me buckle and landed on my knees.
"LOOKY LOOKY BOYS!" He yelled. The other 3 men who were once pouncing on Alvaro, stopped and held him still.
The man who brought me to my knees, zip-tied my hands behind my back. I winced in pain as to how tight he bonded my wrists together.
"Well aren't you a pretty thing—" He said as he roughly grabbed my face.
"Let her go!" Yelled Alvaro. I spat in the strangers face. He smirked and wiped it off before punching me in the face, busting my lip. I had a flash back of being punched in the face by Ryder.

Watching those men handle Mia the way they did made my blood boil. "Well aren't you a pretty thing—" The man said as he grabbed her face.
"Let her go!" I yelled. I was so ready to break free until Mia quickly reacted and spat in the man's face. He didn't like that, not one bit. In a split second he punched Mia in the face. She lifted her head and I could see that her lip was busted badly and bleeding. Her eyes began to show fear. She looked scared.
I broke free from the men who once held me down. I leaped towards the same man who punched Mia and grabbed the knife that was on his waist, stabbing him in the leg. The other men caught up to me and grabbed me again.
"You fucking piece of shit!" He cried. The man quickly pulled the knife out from his leg and threw it aside.
"Take the bitch to Ryder!" He ordered. The other man grabbed a cloth from his back pocket and covered Mia's nose, allowing her to pass out, dragging her away.
I was instantly hit on the head with an object and my vision began to blur. "MIA!!" I yelled and slurred her name. They hit me on my head once more and I passed out.
