Brian was very excited to finally have a real feast with real food. He pulled out a packet for 4 people and put it in the pot and let it cook. He was very hungry but knew that patience would be worth it. He decided to pull out a drink packet, it said orange juice on it, and all you had to do was add water. So he got up and went to the lake to grab some water. While he was filling up the cup he heard it, the roar of an engine. It's been ages since he heard an
engine and all hope of being rescued was gone so it took a moment to process it.
But he did. He dropped the cup in the water and ran to his fire to grab a lit stick to light his bonfire. He knocked over the soup and cursed in his mind but he knew that he had plenty more anyways, and if he was to be rescued he wouldn't have to worry about 1 package of food.He got a stick that was on fire and ran to his bonfire, little did he know though he didn't need to light a bonfire because the plane was there for him! He didn't realise that he left the emergency transmitter on.
The plane came down into the opening and dropped down a floating platform that was very light. The pilot couldn't land in the water and the shoreline was too small for him to land there as well. Brian knew he had to swim to the middle of the lake to be rescued, but he wasn't complaining. He dropped everything and ran into the water almost diving head first as he tripped over some driftwood. He got up and continued to run. He was staring at the pilot in disbelief the whole time he was running, questioning if he was dreaming. He pushed the thought away and continued to run.
He couldn't hear what the pilot was saying but he could see that his lips were moving and he looked concerned, scared, maybe mortified? But why? Why was the pilot yelling at him? He swam in the lake before so it's not a big deal, he swam for nearly 2 hours and he still made it. Why was the pilot so worried?
At that very moment Brian's vision went black. Nothing made sense until he realised there was a huge grizzly bear pouncing on him. He didn't notice the bear. He probably startled the bear when he got up and started running for the lake. The bear probably thought that Brian was going to attack it for some reason. The pilot couldn't do anything because he couldn't land in the water, the bush plane would sink and they would both be stuck.
The pilot kept throwing anything he could find towards the bear but couldn't get close enough. Brian's freedom was right there, right before his eyes. And all he could do was sit there and watch while he was being attacked by a bear. When Brian finally processed what was happening he tried desperately to break free of the bear's paws. That made the bear dig his claws into Brian's shoulders.
That was the worst pain Brian had ever felt. It was like lava had touched his shoulders, the bear was ripping his shoulders apart.Brian's arms went numb, he couldn't move them, he couldn't push the bear off. The bear was huge so any thought of kicking and using his legs were diminished. This was it, he was going to die.
But why? What did he do? He fought to stay alive for 2 whole months, he made many mistakes but he'd come so far. Why now? Brian didn't have much time to think, his vision was going in and out.The pilot had an M1911 on him but only had 2 bullets left. The pilot took aim and pointed right at the bears back where he knew the heart would be. He shot but missed the first one, loaded and tried to breathe and focus and when he shot he got the bear in his left shoulder, stopping the bear for only a second. The pilot knew he had no more bullets, he couldn't jump into the water, he couldn't distract the bear because the bear was too fixated on Brian. All the pilot could do was sit there. Brian realised that the pilot couldn't do anything, so Brian laid there trying to accept his death. His punishment for keeping The secret
. Brian's throat closed up from screaming for so long. He didn't even realise he was screaming.
The bear dug his teeth into Brian's neck and pulled back in a hurry to kill its prey and get out of there quickly. Brian's faint screaming abruptly stopped. The pilot knew, Brian was dead. Brian's vision went red, the pain that he had felt a minute ago was gone. He felt warm. The sun peeked from the side of the bear and hit the side of his face. Brian felt content.
A minute ago he was screaming and didn't want to die, now the thought of dying didn't seem so bad. He let out his last breath. He started to see his mother, his father. Not the man that his mother was with but his father and mother, together. They were smiling and in the kitchen making dinner together. There Brian sat at the Island where he usually sat after school while he did his homework and listened to some music. Everything seemed so real, so peaceful, so perfect. Brian felt happy, he felt that he was finally at home, where he belonged. Brian's vision slowly left and his consciousness faded. Brian died, but he died happy and content.
