Father

If I asked him to,
My father, he would buy me a mockingbird.
He would give me the world.
He would buy a diamond ring for me
He would sing for me. He'd do anything for me to see me smile

But the bar is still set pretty low.
Dad was always on the go.
Always left me home alone.
I remember for a couple of years of my life
He lived in the room next to mine
And he wouldn't even say "hi."
"I love you" felt like a lie.
I mean, what kind of father would leave his daughter to his mother?
What type of father wouldn't bother trying to prove how much he loved her?
I know you're an alcoholic and you're trying to save your life.
I know there's no other way, but could you please be in mine?

He'd say, hush little lady, dont you cry.
Everything's gonna be alright.
Keep that chin up, little lady,
Dont you cry, baby.
Try to sleep through the night.
And if I asked him to,
My father, he would buy me a mockingbird.
He would give me the world.
He would buy a diamond ring for me
He would sing for me. He'd do anything for me to see me smile

I'm really glad that my father was observant.
He was noticin' my hurtin' and seeing the shadows lurkin'.
We saw me at ten, stabbing lead in my little hand,
Every time, I got upset till my skin was busted and red.
When he saw my self-harm, he held me in his arms.
He said, "I know that it's hard, but you can heal from any scars."

I tried to take my life. I remember in the bathroom yelling, "I just wanna die!"
Put the razor to my wrist and let that sharp blade slide.
I had a bottle of pills to my side, and I cried.
I took a handful, and I closed my little eyes.
I was sick to my stomach. The tub was filled with blood and vomit.
The light was off, and the bath was runnin.
Waves of pain and puke just kept commin.
I was shaking, and I was spazzing till there were no tears left to cry.
Then I saw my father standing next to a grave that was mine.
I knew I was alive because my father had decided that he wasn't gonna give up on his little child.
I'm going happy that I survived. I'm so happy that I'm alive.
My father might not think that he's the best, but he set the bar pretty high.

He'd say, hush little lady, dont you cry.
Everything's gonna be alright.
I'm keeping my chin up, Daddy
I ain't crying, Daddy
I promise you, I'll be just fine.
And if I have kids, I would buy them a mockingbird.
I would give them the world.
I would buy a diamond ring for'em'
I would sing for em', because my father
Remembered to make me smile
