She self consciously rubbed her arms

Being careful to avoid putting too much pressure on her scars

She saw the stares

The pity, the contempt, the understanding

It made her feel sick

A hollow feeling seizing her chest cavity

Sucking out all emotion

She saw him

Her childhood crush

And also her best friend

He was leaning against a locker

She ducked to avoid his gaze

But it fell on her anyways

Though not on her, in reality

But on the angry red lines on her arm

That flashed at him

And gave out the silent warning:

Caution, Instability lies ahead

Her pale skin reddened with shame

She pulled her short sleeve down

Trying to hide the deformities that marred her skin

Tears filling her eyes as she failed

Her chest tightened

And she felt an all too familiar feeling of anxiety

Settle in her bones

She ducked quickly into an empty classroom

Hoping to find a reprieve from the curious eyes

She was out of luck, though

The next thing she knew

The door had opened and gently shut

Filling the room with his comforting presence

"Hope..."

He beseeched

She lashed out, feeling the discomfort of being exposed

"Just leave."

But he stayed

Came closer slowly, steadily

As if approaching a caged animal

A hand against her cheek

Kind chocolate eyes staring into her own

One, two, three heart beats skipped

They gazed at each other

The girl, so desperately afraid

The boy, so desperate to erase her fears

He inched closer

And closer yet

Her eyes closed of their own volition

As she felt his gentle breath

He looked at the beautiful girl

Who he so earnestly loved

Looked past her flaws and scars

He touched his lips to hers

A beeping noise filled her head

Her alarm was going off

It had just been a dream
