- So tell me a little about yourself. – says John in the car. – We have almost two hours to get to know each other.
- Well, let's see... I really like languages, mostly because I want to get as far from here as possible. I have been looking into universities and scholarships abroad which involve studying them. I speak German and Spanish and I want to study French as well. I always tried to spend all my time away from home so I have been working a lot. I was a hostess, waiter, interpreter, tutor, many different jobs really. I think that I want to be a teacher in the future, I want to help children who don't have a lot of possibilities due to their backgrounds. I also like running, I go every day, it helps me clean my mind. What about you? What do you do? – I ask him.
- I am happy to hear that you like sports because I am a personal trainer. I work with one of the drivers in Mercedes, Lewis Hamilton. I don't know if you have heard about him. I help him get ready for the competitions. We also travel a lot to the Grand Prixes, all around the world so I am away from home a lot. I hope that won't be a problem for you. Of course, when you don't have school I would be happy if you could come with us. I could show you my favourite places, and we could check out some universities if you want to.
- That sounds like a dream. – I chuckle. – I don't watch TV, so I haven't seen any competition but I heard the name Hamilton. He is like a legend, right?
- Yes, he is. – he laughs. – He is a 6 times world champion, he holds the record and hopefully this year he will win his seventh. The car looks very strong this year too.
- I don't know anything about Formula 1 but it sounds interesting. I will do some research later. How did you end up working with him?
- Remember my friend who helped me? When I ran away, I was a mess. I found a job in Brackley at a gym. They let me sleep there in exchange for cleaning. I didn't have anyone so I spent a lot of time working out. I met my friend there. He said that I have a lot of potential so he helped me get a personal trainer certificate and he also found me a job at Mercedes. He was an engineer for the team but he is retired now. I started working at the factory. I held classes, trained the staff and I made my way up to the drivers. Lewis asked me to be his right-hand man because we hit it off from the beginning. He is not only my boss but my best friend. We became really close throughout the years mainly because we are spending a lot of time together and he is a really good person not like our parents. I have to ask, what was it like growing up with them? – he asks cautiously.
- I'd rather not talk about it. I want to leave the past behind. – I say.
I think he understands that it is too painful to talk about it so he doesn't push me to relive all the terrible things that I had to go through. I just want to forget everything and move on. John genuinely seems like a good person despite his upbringing. I hope that I will have a normal life just as him. I don't want my family to define me.
- Let's talk about some rules. – he changes the subject. – Rule number one: you have to go to school. The local schools are quite good, I think, at least my co-workers say so. We will find you a new place. I want you to graduate, don't drop out like me.
- I agree. I want to finish high school and go to university.
- Rule number two: I know that I am not your father, and I won't tell you what you can or can't do but I always want to know where you are. Here, put your number in it and text me wherever you are. – he gives me his phone.
I take it and create a new contact. Once I wrote my number, I call it to make sure that I have his as well.
- I turned on the friend tracking, so you can see where I am. – I say handing back his phone.
- I was thinking about setting up a bank account for you. I will give you a monthly allowance to spend however you want to. You don't have to work anymore; you can just focus on your grades.
- That is really nice but I don't want your money. I want to work and support myself. – I say denying his offer.
I want to keep my independence. John seems like a nice guy but I don't trust him. I don't trust anyone. I want to make my own money just in case I have to run away because he turns out to be an asshole like our parents.
- Okay, I accept your decision, nevertheless, I will open that bank account. If you ever need anything, just use it please. – he says.
I nod in response. I know that I will never use it but if it makes him calm so be it.
- And ehm a possible rule four, do you have a boyfriend? – he asks nervously.
- No, I don't date. – I answer shortly.
I mean I could have a boyfriend if I wanted to. There were a lot of guys who asked me on dates. Objectively speaking, I look okay. I never had any problems with my body. I also inherited the dark brown hair and flawless skin. My eyes aren't as blue as John's but they are a mix between blue and green. I always loved my eyes. And thanks to running a lot, I have a slim body but with the necessary curves.
- Do you have a girlfriend? – I ask.
- No, I travel a lot so I don't have the time or capacity for having a normal relationship. – he answers. – If you want to, you can date boys but ehm, you know, be careful and everything...
- We don't have to have the talk, thanks. – I say quickly, feeling my face go red.
We spend the rest of the time talking and getting to know each other.
- We arrived. – says John in front of a huge apartment complex.
He drives into the parking lot which is situated just below thebuilding. He parks the car, we get my bags and head towards the elevator. Inervously step into the lift not knowing what awaits me.
