"So marriage huh?"
"What?"
Massad inhales deeply before speaking again, "didn't think you'd get married so soon."
"What's that suppose to mean?" Tamara asks, her voice dripping with defensiveness though she tries her best to not to show it as she casually takes a bite from a banana.
"It's just... you never said anything about-"
"Hey baby!"
And just like that, Massad wishes he could disappear right then and there into thin air the moment he hears that voice and he refrains from rolling his eyes. 6 months later and he still can't bring himself to like the man no matter how hard Tamara has tried to convince him, she's too smitten to notice him anyway.
Tamara squeals upon hearing her husband walk through the front door. She turns to face him as he walks up to her in his regular gym clothes now stuck to his toned body thanks to sweat. She smiles at him as he plants a kiss on her lips seemingly forgetting Massad's presence in the moment of pure bliss.
Massad bites the inside of his cheek and quickly looks away from the scene unfolding in front of him trying to ignore the small pang that spreads through his chest. He doesn't succeed in blocking out the couple's romantic exchange but doesn't have to try any longer when he sees Tamara voice his discomfort.
She has to gently push Tion away by the chest to remind him Massad is uncomfortably watching them from his spot at the kitchen counter. Tion reluctantly pulls away but turns to Massad who mentally prays to God for patience as he prepares to face the man he obviously wasn't too fond of.
"Moussa." Tion nods curtly towards him.
"It's Massad."
"Tion really sucks when it comes to names." Tamara says while nudging her husband's arm playfully but Massad doesn't miss the quick scowl she gives him.
"My bad, I promise it'll be engraved in my brain if I keep seeing you this often." Tion playfully remarks before kissing his wife's forehead and walking off to take a shower.
Massad doesn't even pretend to smile yet alone laughs and watches as Tion heads upstairs laughing to himself. He turns to look at Tamara who's already giving him an apologetic look hoping he'll overlook one of Tion's many disrespectful "jokes".
"I'm sorry about him. I don't know why he's so-"
"He clearly doesn't want me here, who are we kidding," Massad scoffs, walking towards the living room to pick his jacket that he dropped on the sofa before slipping it on, "I don't blame him, no husband wants to come home to see his wife hanging out with her guy best friend."
At that Tamara rolls her eyes and follows behind Massad as he opens the front door letting her know he doesn't want to be here any longer.
"Come on, don't say it like that. He doesn't hate you, he just doesn't know you yet but once he does he'll see why I've kept you around." She casually jokes hoping to lighten the mood but it is to no avail.
"Please, it's been months now, almost a year and this man still doesn't like me. I don't think he intends to even try," Massad stops in front of a grey BMW and turns to face his best friend and as he does, he spots Tion staring at him from a window. Unsure of what to do exactly, he briefly lifts his hand and gives the man an almost non-existent toothless smile before looking at the young woman again, "Yeah, I think I'll see you soon but I'm not coming to your house again. We can catch up at your brother's."
Tamara understands he doesn't want any more confrontation with Tion so he doesn't hug her like he usually does knowing her husband is watching but she can't help but feel like she's losing one of the people she loves and trusts the most. She watches as he gets into his car, shutting the door behind him seemingly deep in thought.
"Massad."
"Love you Tams."
Tamara watches as the man starts the engine after quickly waving at her and backing out of her driveway.
"Love you too..."
