The sun was setting as Nathalie locked the door of the Agreste Manor. The orange glow seeped through the windows and cast a warm light over the living room. She dropped her phone onto the hall table and let out an exasperated sigh. The weight of her jealousy was suffocating her, like a heavy shroud, as she picked up the photo frame on the dresser of her room: Felix and Amelie at the beach. They looked so carefree, so happy, their laughter frozen in time. Nathalie hated herself for feeling so jealous of Amelie, but she couldn't help it.
Nathalie had messed it up, she knew that. The last time she had seen Amelie, they had exchanged words. Cruel words, words Nathalie wanted to take back. Amelie's cold gaze haunted her, and she knew she had to apologize. She needed to make amends.
But Amelie had moved to London since then, and Amelie had to take care of Felix after her husband had passed away. The bond between mother and son grew, the warmth of their love palpable even from the photo. And here she was, miles and years apart from them, and she couldn't squelch the burning envy.
Nathalie sat down on the sofa, the photo frame still in her hands. She traced her fingers over their faces, wondering whether she deserved their forgiveness. She had always wanted a family of her own, and seeing Felix and Amelie together was a painful reminder of what she had missed out on.
As a tear slid down her cheek, she made up her mind. She would go to London, find Amelie, and apologize for her behavior. It wouldn't be easy, but she had to do it. If only to lessen the weight on her chest, to clear her conscience, and to rebuild what once was.
Tomorrow, she decided, she would make the first arrangements for her trip to London. She couldn't delay any longer. As she finally placed the photo frame back on the mantelpiece, Nathalie opened the window, letting in a crisp breeze that brought a sense of resolve. It was time to face the past, to heal old wounds, and to grow.
How she hated them. How she loved them.
This jealousy had been festering within her from the moment she first laid eyes on the photograph. It was a perfectly captured moment, a small thing of a life she would never be a part of.
And it tore her life apart, this longing, this desire for a future with Felix that would never come to pass. He was, after all, not her love or her family.
Nathalie's heart tightened as she remembered the last time she had seen Amelie. The encounter had been marred by her jealousy; it had pushed her to be unkind, callous, and downright cruel.
Now, however, that same jealousy compelled Nathalie to make amends. It wasn't about forgiveness - not really. No, it was about seeing Amelie, confronting her, becoming a part of that picture-perfect life, even if for just a moment.
She had to find Amelie. It was the only way to put an end to the torment that had plagued her, to heal the wounds that she herself had inflicted. From what she knew, Amelie resided in London now, a world away from the little house that Nathalie called home.
It would be a journey - one that would force her to face her own demons head-on.
The photograph seemed to weigh heavily in her hands, as if the weight of her sorrow and longing had seeped into the glossy image.
With a sigh, Nathalie placed it back on her dresser, allowing her eyes to linger on it for a moment longer before she turned her attention to the task at hand. She would need to make a plan, figure out how to make the journey to London and locate Amelie.
It wouldn't be an easy task, of that she was certain, but she had to try.
And perhaps, in confronting her jealousy and seeking forgiveness from Amelie, Nathalie could find a way to be at peace with the love she would never have:
the love that belonged to another, wrapped securely in a family portrait, just out of reach.
