Stares

As the day went on, I ended up actually learning a lot about Jason. It turned out we had all our classes together except for Band. We talked a lot throughout the day and were assigned to sit next to each other in History.
After lunch I had Science so I headed there first. I wasn't really looking forward to it, as the teacher was rumored to be comparable to a scavenger bird, picking on those who weren't doing so well. Later, I found out that the simile was exaggerated, and yet, still had a bit of truth buried within it.
Once everyone entered the classroom, the teacher, Ms. Griffs, called attendance. Everyone was present except for Jason.
"Well," Ms. Griffs started, "has anyone seen this boy? Is he here today?"
I could literally hear crickets.
"I ought to mark him absent then, if no one's seen him," the vulture continued. I would have let her do so if I had not thought of Vi and how it would embarrass her if she found out her crush was marked absent on the first day of school.
Finding it my duty to help keep his record clean, I raised my hand a little. Unfortunately, she didn't notice and I was forced to speak.
"Ms. Griffs...Jason is here today...he's probably just running a bit late with it being his first day at this school," I barely whispered.
I regretted the words as soon as I saw Ms. Griffs set her cold blue eyes on mine in a hard stare.
"Are you defending Mr. Waters, Miss Charleston? What kind of an excuse is that? It's his first day...so what?! It's everyone's first day! He has no excuse!" Just as she finished delivering my reprimand, a certain boy sprinted into the room, panting and out of breath.
"Fantastic. You couldn't have shown up 2 minutes ago now couldn't you?"
"Oh! So he decided to show up! Well, being as she's the only person in the room willing to say anything about you, why don't you sit next to Miss Charleston?" It wasn't so much a question as it was a command.
Seemingly unfazed by her horrid attitude, Jason simply nodded and came to sit next to me. The moment Ms. Griffs turned her back, Jason's face erupted in a proud smirk as he stuck his tongue out at her in a most immature gesture of nonchalance and ignorance. A couple kids covered their mouths trying to stifle the giggles they knew would give Jason away. Fortunately for Jason, the kids in this class had much practice in stifling their laughter and the vulture didn't notice anything.
Class went by normally except for one small detail. All throughout the "fun team-building activities", I could feel people staring at Jason and me. Whenever he'd high five me four more kids would stare until someone else in the class did something. Just the fact Jason was sitting next to me seemed to get a lot of attention. I had absolutely no idea why. Even after class, in the halls, people would look at me for a couple seconds before rushing away. I constantly touched my hair and dusted my clothes thinking maybe I looked strange. My friends told me I looked fine.
By the end of the day, I was thoroughly confused and heck, I had all the reason to be.
