Mountain Lions, Group Dates, and Weird Voices Part 2
Ash snuck down the stairs later that night, checking to make sure that both Crystal and Mom weren't down there. Mom hadn't had to work at the Vet Clinic that night as Deaton was working instead, although she was still up, grading papers for the elective class that she taught at Devenford Prep. Thankfully, she wasn't grading papers downstairs like she had done the first few nights after school until they had managed to get her office set up. She wasn't out back on their patio either, just enjoying the quiet evening, which was a relief. One less obstacle for Ash to worry about.
Just as he made it to the garage door, his keys in hand, a voice stopped him short.
"Ash? Where are you going?"
Ash turned around to see Crystal standing there, wearing her fluffy Stitch pajama pants and a tank top with her arms crossed and a suspicious look on her face.
"Um... out," Ash told her, pointing towards the garage door as he walked backwards toward it.
"Does Mom know?"
Ash didn't know how to respond. He knew he could lie to her, but he also knew if he did that, she would instantly know he was lying and she had made it pretty clear how she felt about that. Plus it would only make the argument they were currently having even worse.
His reluctance to answer was answer enough and Crystal sighed and rolled her eyes.
"Of course not," Crystal muttered, uncrossing her arms and letting them fall to her sides.
"Please don't say anything!" Ash exclaimed, knowing he would never make it to meet Scott and Stiles in time if Mom got involved.
"And why shouldn't I?"
"Because this is important! Please, Crystal, I'll do anything!"
"Anything?" Ash knew immediately he had made a mistake in saying that, but there was no point in going back. He nodded his head. "Then tell me who you're going to meet, and why."
Ash hesitated, weighing the pros and cons, before deciding that it wouldn't put her in any danger to know that. "I'm going to meet Scott and Stiles. Scott wanted some help with something, although he didn't tell me what exactly."
Crystal nodded her head. "Alright. How long do you think you're going to be?"
"Only a couple hours," Ash shrugged, wondering when the other shoe was going to drop. "Not too long." He was surprised that Crystal hadn't taken advantage of his hasty promise by asking him about what had happened that eventful Friday night or about any of the other strange happenings since they had moved to Beacon Hills, but he wasn't going to 'look a gift pegasus in the mouth' as Mom would say.
"Okay. Stay safe." And with that Crystal turned and headed back to her room, leaving Ash staring after her, stunned at how peaceful the whole interaction had been.
He shook himself, deciding to just let it go and hope it wouldn't come up again. Ash went out into the garage, slipping his helmet on before he grabbed the handlebars of his bike, opened the garage door, grateful that Mom's room wasn't above the garage, and pushed his bike out onto the driveway. He swung his leg over the bike and started it and left his house, heading to the school.
When Ash got there, Stiles' Jeep was sitting parked outside the fenced entrance area of the school's bus lot, with neither sophomore in said vehicle. Instead, they were arguing in front of the fence, taking no heed to their surroundings or of anyone who could potentially catch them there. Ash shut off his bike, and took off his helmet, shaking his head at how easy they both made it to 'sneak up' on them.
