A/N: Apologies if this story is bad. <3 It's my first actual story so thank you for reading. :) Enjoy!
...
A thud was heard from above. I lifted my head to give a questioning look at the white popcorn ceiling. Another thud and then screams echoed above. I looked around to find my brunette friend, Lexi, already looking at me with wide eyes. 'Di- you he- th-t' She mouthed to me from across the room. The other kids in the class started mumbling to each other. Mrs. Moore, our math teacher, attempted calming the class down but to no avail.
I flinched when a loud bang sounded at the door of the classroom. Mrs. Moore made her way over to the door, and cracked it open slowly. The class silenced as they all watched her. The door came barrowling open and Mrs. Moore screamed a blood curdling scream. I watched in panic as some odd creature started eating at her flesh. The creature's bones crunched and cracked as it moved. It suddenly looked up at the students and ran towards a black-haired girl.
I stood up and grabbed my backpack, bolting towards Lexi. The students were either screaming or running around, trying to get out of the classroom. I grabbed Lexi's wrist and we shared a terrified look. We sprinted towards the exit, trampling over some fallen chairs and forgotten backpacks. I didn't know what was happening, but I knew I needed to get out of here with Lexi. As we were exiting the classroom, I looked over my shoulder, seeing the horrifying sight of blood and guts and odd creatures that resembled bloody and rotten versions of my classmates and teacher.
Lexi and I started running towards the front gates, however, they were blocked off by crowds of screaming students. Blood was splattered on the floor as the creatures wreaked havoc against the school. I stood watching the scene unfold. It was utterly terrifying.
"Hey! Rory?! Snap out of it. Now is definitely not the time to be zoning out like that. We need to go. Now!" Lexi's voice snapped me out of my thoughts. She was right. I started looking around frantically for any way to escape the school. Then I remembered.
"Follow me." I said, running away to the back of the school. Lexi followed closely behind me.
Once we made it to the back of the school, I looked up at the big, metal gate looming over us. I tossed my backpack over the fence and started climbing.
"C'mon." Was all I said before Lexi hesitantly climbed up with me. I swung my feet over the top and landed on the grass below me. I winced slightly from the sudden impact. I looked up to see Lexi slowly climbing down. "We don't have all day, hurry up." I paused in thought, "We should go to a store next, maybe get some supplies. We'll need to protect ourselves from those... things" I suggested.
"AH!" Lexi screamed as she fell a few feet down from the fence. I laughed at her clumsiness and offered her a hand. She pouted and slapped my hand away, standing up on her own. "Stop laughing at me. Let's just go to the corner store or whatever." She said as she started walking towards the forest. "I know a shortcut."
I caught up to Lexi's pace and followed her through the eerie forest. I looked up at the gaps of sunlight through the trees and sighed. What was happening? And what were those creatures? Before I could bump into a tree Lexi grabbed my wrist and pulled me towards her.
"I thought I told you to stop zoning out." She scolded. "Once we know we're safe, then you can zone out all you want. Just pay attention for now. Got it?" She said, raising an eyebrow.
"Yeah yeah. What are you, my mom?" I joked, smiling at her. She sighed and let go of my wrist, walking ahead of me towards opening in the woods. I went after her and surveyed the area with her.
"I think there's a Target or something down that way." Lexi mumbled, lazily pointing down the street to the left of us.
. . .
I rested with my hands on my knees for a second before walking into the store. The walk was longer than I anticipated but regardless I walked into the store with Lexi. I crossed my arms as I eyed up the aisles. I whipped my head around behind me as I heard a scream. Shit. I saw a zombie-like creature in the parking lot, eating a woman's guts out. Just great. This is just fucking great. As other people stared in horror and shock, Lexi and I made our way to the Back to School aisle.
I grabbed a sturdy looking leather backpack with a bunch of pockets on it. Perfect. I hurriedly walked around and got a medkit, matches, canned food, chapstick, a flashlight and batteries, walkie talkies, and a few knives. I tossed my school backpack to the side, only grabbing my phone, my portable charger, metal water bottle, writing utensils, and my wallet.
More screams were heard from somewhere in the store. After Lexi finished packing up as well we booked it. We ran to the front of the store, only to find that it was cut off by those zombie things. I gripped my knife tighter as a zombie sprinted towards me. As it got closer and swung the knife into the side of its head, flinching at the sight. Blood sprayed on my hand and face. The zombie twitched and squelched on the floor. Lexi was also fighting a zombie on her own. She dodged an attack as I kicked it back on the glossy floors.
"This way!" I shouted to Lexi as I slid across the floors to the emergency exit sign. A group of 5 or 6 zombies quickly made their way towards us. I pushed one of the clothing racks in front of them to stall for more time. Lexi struggled with the door before pushing it open. She grabbed my wrist and pulled me in before slamming the door shut. I could feel her hitched and uneasy breath on my neck. After a few minutes of silence we composed ourselves. We ended up in another small room. The door we ran in from was a splotchy white color, the paint peeling off. On the opposite side of the room there was another door, it was a little bigger and was a rusty metal. I stared at it for a second, feeling a sense of impending doom.
BANG!
Oh fuck this...
