I brushed through my hair gently, humming happy birthday to myself. It wasn't my birthday. It was my brother's 20th but I had to practice. I was my father's perfect son after all. Perfect people don't make mistakes. I tried not to think about whatever elaborate plan my parents will throw at me this year. Every birthday they always have surprises. Ever since they ran out of surprises for Remus, they've thrown it at me. They always do. It's a tradition, a bad one, but a tradition.
Two years ago it was Remus, my brother who would be taking the throne, which I was thankful for. Last year it was I would get married to some powerful prince guy who's the adopted son of our enemy kingdom. Something about not starting a war, I didn't pay attention. This year, I took a guess and said I'm meeting said powerful prince guy.
"I don't get how you do this." I turned to look at Remus, who had just opened up my door. He chuckled and sat down on my soft bed.
"Do what?"
I sighed, setting down my brush to instead grab Liz, my lizard. "I don't know, how about all these responsibilities." I shutter at just the word. "It's so stressful and scary!" I stare longingly at the red suit I desperately want to wear. Yet 'prince rules' say I should wear Green. Like my mother. I hate being a prince.
He just laughed, falling onto my bed. I was being very serious, being the responsible one is scary. I can't go out and get drunk in town. I have to stay in the castle and be a good wife. Yuck. Remus, despite being the more responsible one, didn't ever take me seriously!
"Roman, It's not that hard. You're just getting married, I've been married 10 different times." Remus bragged. Although Remus was telling the truth, he has been married 10 times, all ended in divorce. Making him a very bad example. ''Being married is a piece of cake!"
"Maybe for you, it is!"
Remus rolled his eyes, "You don't have to, You could just tell Mom and Dad you don't want to get married. Tell them the brutal truth." I think he's going crazy. Why the hell would I do that? The first time I snuck out to go to the town to party and drink, they told me they would marry me off, knowing I wanted to be married for love. They stayed true to their world and now I get to meet my future husband.
"Yeah, no. I'm not doing that."
Remus raised an eyebrow, "And why not?" He inquired.
I scoff, "Are you joking? I have plans with Logan, I can't miss it."
"You could though."
"Or not though." My brother sighed. He never understood my obsession with our town. Logan was my escape, he helps me understand.
I set Liz back down on my vanity, carefully setting her down as he makes space to fall asleep.
"You do know that the ball is tonight, our parents would never let you skip out on that and if you do skip there could be a war on our hands." Remus scolded me.
I scoffed, refusing to look Remus directly in the eye. I didn't want to think about that, I hate that my title has so much control over me. I just want to be free. I focused on Liz, who was sleeping despite the fact the sun is at its brightest moment. I smiled, planting a soft kiss on her head.
"Isn't she cute?" Unfortunately, I did not get a reply. Though I'm sure Remus is glaring at me. Sighing, I get up and sit down by Remus. Finally looking directly at him. "I haven't told them. I don't want to get married to whoever this guy is because I have no reason not to. After you take the throne Mom and Dad will be dead and I'll be expected to have married back into royalty. It would be disgraceful if I didn't. I just want one last night with my friend."
