"Clear!"
What's going on?
"Clear!"
This yelling is making my head hurt. I just want to sleep.
"Clear!"
"We have a heartbeat. It's slow, but it's there."
"Good. Let's get him stable before we contact his family."
"Shouldn't we contact them now?"
Esmie jumped out of her sleep and looked around. She was still in the room she shared with Phara. She wiped her face of its tears and placed a hand on her chest as she tried to slow her breathing. What was that? Something's not right.
"We have to get to the hospital," she heard a tiny voice whisper. "Hurry!"
Esmie eased out of bed, grabbed a coat, and ran downstairs. She grabbed her keys and was about to walk out the door.
"Where are you going?"
She covered her mouth to muffle the scream that escaped her lips. Jun sat in the dark, reading a book and sipping wine.
"I have to go," Esmie said, dismissing the question.
Jun could tell something was wrong, so she sat her glass down and closed her book after placing her marker.
"Then let's go."
"What?" Esmie was stunned Jun didn't rebuttal against her leaving, especially since it was so late at night.
"I said let's go," Jun said, gesturing to the door.
Esmie ran out the door to her car, waiting for Jun to get in. She got in the passenger side, knowing wasn't going to let her drive.
She looked at the house and felt bad for leaving without letting Sila or Phara know. "I'll call them later," she mumbled as Jun started the car and took off down the dirt road.
"They will understand."
She reached into the pocket her phone would normally be in but came up empty-handed. "Damn it, I left my phone."
"Here, use mine," Jun said, then handed her phone over.
"Thank you," Esmie said and began dialing Zhana's number. It was a good thing that Jun had her number because Esmie was too panicked to remember the number correctly.
"Come on, pick up, pick up."
"Hello," Zhana's drowsy voice came from the phone.
"Zhana!"
"Esmie, why are you yelling in my ear?"
"Zhana, you have to get to the hospital now."
So that's where we're going.
Jun nodded her head and sped up. She knew what hospital Esmie was talking about. It was the only hospital they had been visiting for the last couple of months.
The hospital Obe resided in.
Obe had been in the hospital since Sebastian found him in the basement. The doctors had stated that he was injected with something so unknown it wasn't even in the oldest records.
The only thing they could do was prolong his death. Since they didn't know what it was, they were afraid to experiment with the substance. Anything could go wrong and he could die.
The ride to the hospital was silent after Esmie ended the call with her sister. All that could be heard was the tapping of Esmie's foot from her bouncing leg.
