Eunice inserted a small cassette into the player she wore around her neck and started walking towards a shopping district that was away by a kilometre or two. She wore a zipless hooded sweater, a pair of jeans trousers which had a lot of space in them and a pair of sneakers whose laces brushed the ground- a usual dressing style for her.
On the way there, she got stopped by a car with tinted glasses. The one in the driver's seat rolled down and a light-skinned man with dark shades popped his head out the window.
Mysterious man: hello darling, you look beautiful, how are you this fine evening?
Eunice looked behind her to check if the man was talking to someone else. She didn't see anyone, but she kept looking back - maybe the person was invisible?
Mysterious man: I'm talking to you hot stuff
Eunice: (looks back at the man in the car) Oh, me? Uh... Okay?
Her eyes twitched, sweat drops fell down her cheeks like tears and her legs trembled, almost breaking apart.
She thought she had woken up that evening in someone else's body because she never got complimented for how she looked.
Mysterious man: alright, where are you heading?
Eunice: oh, I'm going to the market (points in the direction of the district she was heading to)
Mysterious man: oh, what a coincidence, I'm heading there too, what do you say to a ride there?
Eunice: (smiles and blushes profusely) ok!
Mysterious man: (laughs) Get in, get on the car, it's open
And like that, Eunice got into the back of the car and closed the door behind her.
The man drove off at a steady speed, but not in the direction of the market square but towards the school gate.
Confused, Eunice looked out the closed tinted window as they drove past the main gate and into the surrounding town.
She wanted to raise a question but she stopped herself so she won't come out as rude as the man kept talking about something she couldn't care less about.
They later got to a supermarket at the edge of the town and it was swarming with people, Eunice couldn't stop looking at the place.
The car came to a halt in between a parking space and the man turned his head to look at the girl in his car
Mysterious man: what's the name, sweetheart?
Eunice: (looks back at the man) huh? I'm Eustacia... I mean Eunice - sorry.
Merlin: well, Eustacia, you can call me Mike
Eunice: Mr Merlin, this isn't the market I was planning to go to
Merlin: well, (he raises his glasses above his head ) you ain't seen nothing yet
Eunice: I don't know oh...
Merlin: come on hottie, let's get a move on! (wears his glasses correctly)
Merlin left the car, tucking his hands in his pocket - Eunice hesitated but came out of the car without taking any more time.
The two went into the supermarket and Merlin ended up buying a speechless Eunice everything she could ever ask for. She was surprised, who is this man and why is he doing all these things for her?
After shopping, he dropped her off at the hostel area back at school later that night with about ten shopping bags filled with provisions, gifts and books
Merlin: that was fun, wasn't it?
Eunice: uhm... Y-yes, I don't know what I'm going to do with all - I mean, I had fun, thank you, sir!
Merlin: yeah, just remember to keep in touch okay?
Eunice: but, I don't have your number
Mike: oh, well what's your number...It all went blank.
Eunice: what's my number? My phone number?
She began to think.
She stood there on the road, with a cold wind breezing through her hair.
She looked up, wanting to tell Merlin that she could collect his instead.
But alas,
He wasn't there,
The road ahead was empty,
The sky was bright grey compared to the darkness that was there a minute before.
And what's worse,
The shopping bags were no longer by her side!
Eunice: oh damn it (she kept walking - towards the market district) if only I got his number.
