"Dad would kill us if he found out we're at the club. You can legally go, but I can't."
I looked at my sweet, innocent sister and smirked. "That's only if he finds out."
We move a place up in line and I take out my I.D. Maya hesitates but she pulls out her fake I.D. The security guard nods and lets us in.
"Mila, maybe we shouldn't do this," Maya tugs on my dress sleeve.
I don't say anything. I walk to the bar and she follows me. "Can I just get two glasses of water, please?" I ask the bartender.
"Have you drank before?" Maya asks.
I sit on the stool. "No, I'm not stupid."
"Funny, you're saying that while you're at a club!"
"Maybe you shouldn't have come, then," I snap at her.
"You told me we were going to your friend's house." She slams a fist on the table.
"Your water," the bartender says, setting our drinks down.
"Sit down," I order her.
"Mila, I don't feel comfortable. What do people even do at a club?"
"Stuff you wouldn't understand," I say before sipping my water.
"I'm going to the bathroom," Maya grumbles.
I scoff and take my phone out. I take a selfie and post it on Instagram. I put my phone on the bar counter and chug my water. Suddenly I felt a hand on my back. I turned around and saw a man behind me.
"Oh, hi." I smiled.
He sits on the stool next to mine. "Hey, gorgeous. Want a shot?"
"I don't drink, sorry," I replied.
He puts a hand on my thigh. I inhale. "Come on, live a little. Why else are you at a club?"
"Alright, fine. One shot." I put up my pointer finger.
"Excuse me," he says to a bartender walking back. "Can I get two shots?" The bartender nods and the man looks back at me. "So how old are you?"
"I'm twenty-two."
"Oh, I like my women young anyway."
The bartender comes back. "I need to see your I.D. first, please."
"Of course." He hands him his I.D. and then gives him the shots. He gives me one but drops his I.D. "Can you get that, please?"
"Yeah." I get off my seat and reach down for the card.
I pick it up and get up. I quickly slammed my hand down on the thief's hand as he attempted to steal it.
"I–I'm so sorry. I–I was just–h–how did you–"
I shove his hand away and grab my phone. "And take the spiked shot, too." I take the shot glass and throw the drugged drink at him before leaving.
And I see Maya. Shoot.
She walks to me but I grab her wrist and exit the club. "Mila, how did you know that he was going to steal your phone?"
"Dad has a lot to teach you," I replied.
"Okay, but that was badass. Did you just like feel it or what?"
"I saw that he spiked my drink and then reached for my phone in the corner of my eye. I don't need both my eyes to pick up a card. You need to be aware of your surroundings. It's common sense."
"I guess..."
I unlocked the car and held the door open for her to enter. She got in and I closed the door firmly behind her.
"Don't make a sound when we get in there, got it?"
Maya nods and I quietly unlock the door and open it. We come in and I reach for the light switch, flipping it on. Only to see my dad sitting on a chair facing us. I put a hand over my mouth and gasp. "Dad–"
"Maya, go to your room."
Maya doesn't hesitate to run into her room.
"Mila, what were you thinking?" Dad asks.
"How did you even know?" I wondered.
"I saw it on your Instagram thing."
"I thought you didn't have Instagram."
"I told you I downloaded it a week ago. Maybe if you actually listened for once, you would know!" he suddenly yelled.
I scoffed. "Excuse me? I listened to you for years!" I yelled. "You told me to play sports; soccer, football, volleyball. I listened. You told me to get good grades, I listened. You told me to listen to this, and that. I listened. Because if I didn't, you would disown me," I lowered my voice.
"After Mom got sick, you changed. You didn't bother to check up on me. Do you even know how old I am?"
"Eighteen," he confidently says.
"I'm nineteen..."
Dad exhales. He claps his hands together and rests his head on them.
"I'm not surprised that you didn't catch me a while ago," I whisper and then head to my room without listening to what he has to say.
