The Augustin family rarely get a break from the farm work, but when they do, it's like a heavy weight lifted off of their chests. Today was a beautiful Sunday. The sun was high in the clear blue sky and the birds were singing a glorious song. Rosalinde and her family were planning to go on an afternoon picnic far from their little farmhouse, and up a neighboring cliff. Rosalinde and her mother walked hand in hand down a long dirt trail, while Jonas and her father walked a few paces ahead of them. The small scattered rocks crunched beneath their feet as they strolled along. The sound of birds humming and crickets chirping surrounded them and they seemed to flow together at a magnificent pace. "Do you all hear that?" Mrs. Augustin asked as she cupped her ears. "The sounds of nature singing all together make the most beautiful orchestra." She began to pretend to conduct them all with her hands with a twinkle in her eye. Rosalinde admired her mother's spirit very much, she was always full of wonder and fascination. So Rosalinde began to play along and conduct them as well, waving her arms in the air and skipping along the path. Mr. Augustin laughed deeply with a warm grin on his bearded face. How could he have gotten so lucky to have the most wonderful wife and children. Although, Jonas seemed to be in a world of his own, hands stuffed in his pockets looking out into the grassy lands.
As they were walking they came across a golden haired dog accompanied by it's owner trotting along behind it. Rosalinde and her mother were still twirling as they walked with their hands in the air. The man recognized his fellow neighbor and made his way to exchange pleasantries. "Afternoon, Mr. Augustin." The man said as he tipped his hat politely. "And the same to you Mrs..." His words stopped in its tracks and so too did Mrs. Augustin's spinning. With a sheepish grin she greeted the man and he returned it with a nervous chuckle. None of them minded Mrs. Augustin's playfulness as much as Jonas did, who looked as if he could die of embarrassment.
"Afternoon, Wagner, sir." Mr. Augustin said in a friendly manner.
"How's the preparation for this year's harvest going?"
"Besides a few mishaps here and there it's going quite well, and you?"
As the men exchanged their manly chatter, Wagner's golden haired dog found it's own way to greet the family. Walking up to Rosalinde it swooped in with a tidal wave of curious sniffing. Sniff, sniff, sniffing Rosalinde from head to toe. She was overwhelmed by this new interaction and backed away nervously, clinging to her mother's dress. Mrs. Rosalinde laughed softly while her hand held her pregnant belly. "It's alright Rosa, see he's a friendly dog." Her delicate hand reached down to pet the dog gently. It was satisfied with this gesture and began to wag its tail from side to side."Okay.." Rosalinde said reluctantly as she reached out to pet the dog as well. She was only used to her farm animals so interactions like this were not very common. As the dog leaned into the palm of her hand, Rosalinde lightly stroked its head. A small smile curved at her lips as she watched the dog happily accept the petting. Soon, the men were done talking and Wagner whistled for his dog to come along back down the trail. Rosalinde watched as the dog quickly trotted back to its owner's side and bid farewell to them all. The rest of their hike went by rather quickly and before they knew it, they reached the top of the cliff.
They found a perfect picnic spot underneath a looming willow tree with green patches of grass surrounding it. With a "fwoosh" of the picnic blanket and the clattering of eating utensils, the picnic spot had been set up. Sitting in a circle, they all held each other's hands and closed their eyes to bless their food. Mrs. Augustin began, "thank you Barbatos for allowing us to spend this wonderful day with each other." The rest of the family nodded in agreement. "Please let this year's crop grow smoothly and provide us with a plentiful harvest and bless our new member of the family. Let them come into this world safe and sound. We know that you're always watching over us and protecting our home. Thank you for all that you do for us, we are forever in your debt. Amen."
"Amen." They responded in unison.
The air was still and silent after the blessing, like a stone statue forever frozen in time. But the family carried on with their meal, laughing and chatting happily in each other's company. Even the grim and serious Jonas appreciated these moments with his family. None of them had to worry about their finances or the farm. And instead could enjoy the warm, stress free atmosphere.
