She wakes up in a hospital bed, slowly opening her eyes. Everything is a blur at first but then she can make out her father sitting in chair next to her bed and her mother in front of the door conversing with what seems to be the doctor. She tries to call out to her mother but her voice is scratchy, as if she hasn't used it in a few days. Her father snaps his attention to her and smiles an uneasy smile.
"Hey kiddo." he says in a whisper. As if he's trying to keep from waking someone up. He waits for her reply, seeming almost anxious.
"Hey..." she answers. Her voice starts to trail off as she looks around the room. "Where am I?" Her voice goes into a panic.
"You're in the hospital. Alice..." he pauses for a moment trying to keep from losing control. "You... You tried to kill yourself..." his voice gets quiet as he answers. He starts to wipe the tears from his eyes and clears his throat. "You've been out for about half a week now." he adds slowly.
"Oh... I remember now." She says in resentment. She starts to feel the pain in her legs as she tries to move. She whimpers quietly. She slowly lifts up the heavy blanket and sees that her legs are wrapped in bandages from her knees all the way up. They are stained in dry blood. She drops the blankets as she starts to cry. She can't believe what she's done, and even worse, what she's put her parents through. Her dad moves to sit on the bed and wipes the tears as they fall from her eyes.
"It's going to be okay. You're safe now, my dear. I'm here and I'm not going anywhere." he says softly to his daughter trying to calm her. "I promise." he starts to hum a lullaby as he movies in a position that allows him to hold her. She starts to calm down after a few minutes pass. Her mother and the doctor come into the room and her mother won't look at her longer than a few minutes at a time. She can tell that her mother doesn't know to make of it.
"Alice." The doctor says in a tone stating he's been talking for a few a while now.
"Yes?" She answers, hoping she didn't miss to much.
"Did you get any of that?" The doctor asks in an impatient voice. She shakes her head stating that she didn't. He sighs softly and tries not to be rude.
"Well, you've been asleep for three and a half days now and you've lost a lot of blood." He pauses making sure she's listening and comprehending everything he told her. "So, we would like to keep you here for another week or so. Just to make sure you're healthy and fit to go home." He pauses again before he directs his attention to her mother once more.
