The Dream

Walking home from my job at the local dinner, I trudge my route while listening to the same playlist since my mother passed. The music she would always play when doing chores or driving somewhere. These songs were her favorite. She shared them with me and they became our songs. We would burst out into the lyrics or throw a dancing party. My favorite memories of her where always with music. Now I listen to them when ever I miss her, which is all the time.

As I turn the first corner on my path, heading towards the park, I get a sudden unsettling feeling. Looking up from the ground I notice fog has settled and the town looks erie. I continue on as nothing bad ever happens here, but that feeling never leaves. Actually as I get closer and closer to the park, that feeling darkens and grows. I now know almost for a fact something isn't right, and I'm about to find out.

Looking at the park, the big - tree hides the swings that quietly creek in the wind. As I inch closer to the park I can see a shadowy figure lurking behind the tree. Once my eyes lock onto the mysterious figure my gut hardens. That is it. That's the bad thing I feel. I know I should run but everything with in me inches me closer. As I do, I finally notice the darker shadow amongst the fog. A body was laid on the ground. The mysterious figure was standing over it. Inching closer I can tell it's, Mara, the florist's daughter who's always bullying her class men. She is lifeless. I don't see any movement, not even the smoky breath that forms within cold air. She was dead. Though she was mean, she doesn't deserve this. I look back up to the figure, now finally close enough to investigate.

Blood. He was covered in blood. Not only on his clothes but his face. It was dripping. His chin seeping wet. Unusual. Yes there are sadistic, psychotic sociopaths who would probably do this, but no that doesn't seem right. This feeling washes over me as I gather the intel of the murder. The mysterious figure finally looks my way. Only then do I notice how close I was, or better yet, the twig that is now broken under my boot. His eyes, red as fire, stare directly into mine. Something clicked in my mind. Like the rushing feeling finally calmed. Somehow I knew that this man was no regular murderer. Not even that, his eyes though now burning with rage has a sense of fear and regret. He wasn't a murderer, thought the evidence proves otherwise, he was a wild beast just trying to survive.  The man still staring at me, as if unsure of what to do. I take one step closer and can finally see a light shining softly on his face. Curly hair shapes his   silhouette. My closeness finally startles him and he turns and leaves, before he turned I caught a small glimpse of something sharp and white in the blur of his face. That makes my gut harden once again.

With the feeling back, I shoot up from my bed in a sweat.

It was a dream? Sighing I laughing. My over imagination really likes to run wild. Pulling the covers away my nightly read falls off my bed. Staring down at it I laugh again. Twilight, I gotta stop reading such books before bed. Getting up I shelf the vampire block that haunted my dreams, and I start my day per usual with a text sesh with my best friends.

Rain: Good morning lazy bums!!

Lidia: guuurl who you calling lazy!

Rain: fiiiine! So weather is finally getting nice again, who is up for a camp out?

I chuckle at my friends banter and chime, in.

Me: wow the girls are all up at the same time, early birds! Get a life lol

Lidia: Ness! Welcome back to the land of the living lol, camp out? Do you mean Big Rock Lake ?? I'm sooo down!

Rain: YEAH DUH! Hey girl, stop moping about day time bull shit, who actually sleeps anyway.

Me: *eye roll* what ever losers, but camp out at Big Rock , I'm down if I can get the time off

Rain: YES!!! We need this bitches!

I laugh and set my phone down. A nice get away this weekend would be nice. I have been putting extra hours in, maybe I can get the time off.

As the day goes on I finish up my chores at home and head to work. The same old boring day waitressing on the same people. The crowd finally dying down near closing time. I get a small window of time where I track down my manager.

" Hey, Janie, I was wondering If I could get the weekend off? The weather is finally nice to go swimming at Big Rock, my friends want to do a camping weekend out there. I know it's a bit short lately but by any chance could I take the vacation?" I ask almost rushing the question out.

" Vanessa , of course you can, you have been working really hard lately and I think you deserve it. Don't worry about staffing that's my job, you just go enjoy yourself." Janie says patting me on my shoulder. She is truly a good boss.

" thank you so much, I'll make sure everything is in peek order before I go." I say nearly praising her.

" Alright, Alright now go finish up " she chuckles and I head back out to close the store.

Our nightly routine goes smoothly as ever. Locking up we go our separate ways. Janie hops into her truck as she lives a town over. I wave her goodbye and set out on my path home. Listening to music on my way home I turn the first corner and a wave of panic sets in. I look up and fog is rolling into town. Something isn't right. I continue on and just like my dream the feeling grows as I reach the park. I stop in my tracks. Everything seems the same. A part of me knows I should turn around and go home another way but I continue on, drawn to the suspense. Inch my inch I reach the park.

And right behind the tree, was him.
