When I was a kid and said I was going to be the greatest soccer player in the world, my mother used to say to me: "if you can dream it you can do it, Matty". I always thought she created it for me, I later found out that Walt Disney said it first. Still, it's something I think about every day when I train. This reminds me that I need to get my jersey for practice this afternoon.
I hear outside my house a car honking and a familiar voice shouting, "Come on Fish, we're late."
I check my phone and it's 7:52. Crap. I run down the stairs and I see that my sister's having breakfast. "Mommy, Matty hasn't had breakfast" she shouted "Bella, come on I'm late" "Matthew you gotta have breakfast" my mother said while entering the room. "Fine" I steal a toast from my sister's plate, kiss my mother goodbye and I get into Brian's car. "I can't believe we're gonna be late the first day of school because you spend too much time doing your hair" Brian shouts. "Good morning to you too, douche"
Brian's my best friend since first grade, he's the captain of our soccer team; he's blond, popular and awfully rich... apparently nothing like me, but we connect.
"So, how'd it go last night?" I ask him.
"We broke up, it was just a summer thing, besides she is going back to Italy"
"I'm sorry man, are you okay?"
"Yeah, why wouldn't I be? It's the last year of high school, we gotta make the best of it"
He was right, I'm gonna be in college next year, probably very far away from him since he wants to play in the MLS. I always hoped he would change his mind about not going to college... My thoughts are swept away when he turns on the radio and we start singing along Harry Styles. Two songs after we're in the school's parking lot. We get out of the car and run to class. We both take literature in the first period and thanks God the teacher loves us. "You're late" Ms. Jefferson tells us. "Sorry Ms." we both say while we sit at our desks. Hours later it's finally lunchtime. While we were queueing to pay, the principal's secretary comes to us. "The principal wants to see both of you in his office" she told us. We leave money at the counter and grab a sandwich to eat on the way.
We eventually get to the principal's office and he lets us in. "Take a seat boys" he said in his usual serious voice. "I asked you here, because you have to help out the photography club" "I'm sorry Mr. Miller but we, or at least I, have no idea how to use a camera" Brian said "That's the thing, you're gonna model" He told us "Why?" I ask horrified "Well, you're seniors, you're in the soccer team and you're both A students. You're gonna be in the yearbook." "Cool" Brian said smiling. "So when are we gonna meet the photography club?" I asked "Now, girls come in" The principal ordered.
Two girls come in. One's a blond-headed and blue-eyed girl, the other one seems familiar. She's red hair and green eyes and that's when it hits me, she's Tray Dixon's little sister. Not so little anymore, I guess. Tray was the captain of our soccer team until last year, now he's in college.
"These are Grace Dixon and Nicole Gray, the founders of the photography club." the principal introduced them "Starting this afternoon, we will be taking photos of you during practice and matches." The blond one said "Today an hour before practice, you'll meet us in room 202 for a uniform photo shoot; Fisher, bring a ball. Shay, bring goalie gloves. All clear?" Grace finished
"All clear" Brian replied with a smirk on his face "All dismissed." the principal said.
