"Ahmm..." Vikrant cleared his throat as he walked into the cabin, his tall frame casting a heavy presence in the room.

Ajay froze the second he saw him and quickly pulled his hand away from Avni's, like he had been caught doing something wrong.

"Sir... Avni brought the file," Ajay said cheerfully, trying too hard to sound normal. His smile lingered a little too long, and his tone was a little too friendly-especially when he said Avni.

Vikrant's eyes darkened.

Something about the way Ajay said her name made his blood boil. So casual. So close. Like he had every right.

His gaze snapped to her.

She was standing quietly, holding the file close to her chest like it was her only protection. Her fingers were trembling. Her eyes were on the floor. She looked... scared.

But not of Ajay.
No. She only looked this small when he-Vikrant-was around. And yet she wasn't running away. She wasn't backing off.

Why not?

And why the hell did Ajay look so at ease next to her?

Vikrant's jaw clenched tighter. Something ugly twisted in his chest.

Ajay stepped forward to take the file, but Vikrant stopped him with just one cold gesture.

"I'll take it," he said, his voice low, tight, and loaded with silent warning.

Both Ajay and Avni looked at him, surprised.

Avni hesitated but stepped forward slowly, like she was walking toward danger. Her heart pounded as he watched her every move, his eyes sharp and unreadable.

Is he going to yell again?
Scold me in front of Ajay?

She stopped in front of him, her grip on the file still firm.

"Give it to me," Vikrant said.

Her eyes flicked up to his face-he was so close now. Her chest tightened. He wasn't glaring. He wasn't shouting. Just... staring. Deep. Intense.

"What are you thinking, Avni? Give me the file..." he added, quieter this time.

The way he said her name-Avni-made her freeze.

It wasn't angry. It wasn't cold. It was... soft. Almost calm. Almost like he wasn't the same man who always snapped at her.

Her eyes widened slightly.
Did he just say my name like... normally?

She slowly handed him the file, their fingers brushing for a brief second. She pulled her hand back quickly.

He looked down at the file and started flipping through it, face unreadable.

But she couldn't stop staring at him.

What's going on? Why isn't he being rude? Why do I feel like he's trying to hold something back?

Then she smirked a little. Her voice had a sweet sarcasm in it.

"Do you want me to stay and explain it to you too, sir? Or do you trust your brain enough today?"

Ajay let out a surprised little laugh but quickly looked down.

Vikrant didn't look up. But his jaw twitched. She saw it.

"You can go," he said simply, eyes still on the file.

No taunt. No insult. No glare. Just... neutral.

She blinked.

That's it? That's all?

"Wow," she mumbled under her breath. "Did I just survive a whole minute with Vikrant Kashyap without being burned alive? Impressive..."
