ashton had been staying with the triplets for almost a week, he had helped them move into their new place, and hadn't returned home.
"yo, can we watch a movie or something?" ashton says getting bored of scrolling tiktok
"yeah, what're we watching?" chris asks, loading up the tv
"i don't care" nick and matt mention at the same time
"just put on like shawshank or some shit" ashton replies, throwing a blanket at nick, who's feet are in his lap
"okay"
about halfway through the movie
nick had flipped around on the couch so that his head was on ashton, ashton played with his hair on the nape of his neck, as the movie played in the background.
"i want to tell them" nick whispers, so only ashton can hear him
"okay, if your wanting my permission you don't need it. they're your brothers, i'm surprised they don't already know" ashton whispers back. feeling nick tense slightly, he sighs deeply, "love, you could've told them ages ago. i wouldn't have been mad" he reassures, placing a small, almost unnoticeable kiss in nick's hair
"promise?" nick questions, sighing softly
"yes, i promise. i could never be mad at you for something like that" ashton promises
"okay" nick breathes, raising his voice slightly to tell his brothers "ashton and i are dating" he says, not saying anything after and refocusing on the movie, trying to calm his racing heart
"you need to breathe, you're gonna make yourself sick if you don't" ashton whispers into his hair, rubbing his back softly
"what?" chris asked, pausing the movie
"no-" nick went to say
"nick and i are dating, have been since like april" ashton interrupts
"okay?" matt says confused, he was extremely happy for them, but he had also been half asleep a moment prior, "happy for you guys" he says, followed by a yawn
"nick?" chris questions his eldest brother who had been quiet since he outed his relationship, "hey, did you think we'd be mad?" he questions
"no? i just, i don't know" nick breathes, "it's a lot" he whispers, sitting up and moving away from ashton
"what is?" ashton questions, trying to meet nicks eyes, who was actively avoiding them
"nothing, never mind" nick rushes out, wiping at his eyes quickly and leaving the room
"is he?" matt questions, receiving a shrug from both chris and ashton
"i don't know, i'll go see." ashton tells them, "wait here"
"nicky?" ashton calls as he walks down the hall towards nick's bedroom, "nico?"
"you alright" ashton asks nick, who doesn't make a move to even acknowledge him, "nick?"
"hmm" he hums
"i asked, are you all right?" ashton repeats his question, moving to sit next to nick on the floor, not touching him yet
"i'm fine. thanks for telling them." nick says, almost sarcastically
"hey, talk to me. where's this coming from?" ashton questions, "i thought you wanted them to know?"
"i did- i do." nick emphasis, "but now that they do, it feels, i don't know, more real?" he mutters
"do you not want it to be real?" ashton questions, trying to hide the tinge of hurt that made his voice waiver
