The man who had assassinated Franklin and his lawyer now sat in a holding cell at the district one police station. His name was Zalim Kayal. Zalim was of Indian descent and 39 years old. He had immigrated to the United States with his parents when he was 7 years old. He tragically lost his parents to the Sikh Temple shooting back in 2012. An officer opened the holding cell to escort the man to the interrogation room.
Inside the interrogation room sat Detective Martin's partner, Darrell James. Darrell James was Nigerian and Jewish. He was born and raised in Milwaukee and had known Detective Martin since they were kids. Darrell was often picked on for his religion and race until he met Martin. After Martin beat up one of his bullies, no one ever bothered him again. From that moment, Darrell wanted to help people just as Martin did for him. This eventually led him to the police force.
Zalim sat down in front of Darrell. Zalim attempted to avoid eye contact with the detective.
"Why?" asked Darrell, "I just want to know why."
"I had no choice. They were killing my people, " said Zalim.
"I don't get what you are trying to say, Zalim, " said Darrell.
"You don't get it. Fine, I'll explain it to you then. My parents and I came to this country in search of tranquility and happiness. For a while, I saw what people meant about America. Here in America, you could live out your dreams and sleep in peace. You didn't have to worry about your parents possibly being attacked, robbed or raped. But slowly the ugliness of this country revealed itself, " said Zalim.
"After 9/11, my parents were stared at and even spit on by fellow Americans. Our loyalty to this country was questioned. People treated us as if we were going to cause trouble. Officially, our citizenship wasn't revoked. Symbolically, it felt as if it was. What kind of country does this to its own citizens? This isn't India. There isn't a caste system here in America. Before the shooting, our home was vandalized. The phrase 'dumb curry' was sprayed painted everywhere!" added Zalim. Darrell silently nodded. He was taking notes on what Zalim was saying.
"But I could still forgive then. But then they killed my family and then, they proceeded to mock them. Our president couldn't even have the courtesy to come visit the temple after the shooting. He may have been black, but he wasn't a friend of ours. The bastard who killed my parents got off easy. He killed himself. I made a promise to myself that I wouldn't let anyone feel the same pain as I felt. Someone needs to stand up for the defenseless and I plan to do just that. Those bastards want war. They got it. We returned fire and they lost like the little bitches they are, " said Zalim with a smirk.
"What about the lawyer? Since he happened to be defending neo-Nazis, he deserved to be shot and killed like an animal?" said Darrell.
"He had a choice. He didn't have to choose to defend them. He chose money over morality and now he's in the same place as them, " chuckled Zalim, "and why the fuck are you even defending them, detective? You are black after all. You are defending them as if they don't want to wipe your face off the earth. Just because you are the police doesn't mean your safe from them. Do you know how many neo-Nazis and racists are in the police department? There are hundreds in the police force. However, they know how to conceal their ideology. So we don't even know the real numbers. It's a warzone, detective and you will get caught in the crossfire if you don't wake up."
"Yeah. Yeah. I am sure I will, " replied Darrell, "Sit tight. I'll be back."
Darrell left the room. The District Attorney(DA) was standing outside, looking into the interrogation room through the glass window.
"Well, that was easy. I didn't have to do much to get motive, " said Darrell.
"Yeah. I feel sorta sorry for the kid. Lost his parents to a piece of shit. It honestly doesn't surprised me he would feel that way, " sighed the DA.
