"Why didn't you talk to me?" I asked in a defeated tone. The silence that followed stretched on for what felt like an eternity. Resting my head against the cold wall of the cell, I closed my eyes to try to calm down when he finally spoke.
"He said that I could walk again"
My heart sank as I heard his words. They promised him the one thing he had been dreaming of for years. To walk again. How could I blame him for trying to achieve something that seemed impossible? I thought to myself, feeling guilty for being so angry at him.
"I thought that I could do it, you know," he said, hanging his head in shame. "I thought that by learning the people's way and carrying out the RDA's orders, I could get my legs back."
When Quaritch offered me the deal, all I could picture was you and me, in that cozy little house we always dreamed of," he spoke, his voice quivering, his eyes brimming with tears. "Finally having a home."
"He gave me hope." He continued a glint of sadness in his eyes. "It was something tangible, something that made me believe that I could live a normal life again. With you."
However, as he spoke, a tinge of regret crept into his voice."But I was wrong," he admitted, his gaze dropping. "I was so blinded by the possibility of walking again that I didn't see the bigger picture, the impact that my actions...
"I longed for our dream to come true, to be the man who deserves to stand by your side." His face contorted, and tears spilled from his eyes, running down his cheeks."I understand If you don't want me by your side anymore"
I couldn't take it anymore.
I quickly rose from the floor, instinctively moving closer to Jake, gently brushing away his tears. "Hey, look at me, please look at me," I say pleadingly
His gaze slowly shifted towards my eyes, afraid of what was to come.
With unwavering compassion, I reassured him," Please know that I will never leave your side, legs or no legs" The weight of the moment hung in the air as his eyes met mine, questioning, hoping for absolution.
A glimmer of gratitude shone in Jake's tear-filled eyes as he softly whispered" Thank you".The vulnerability in his voice shattered my heart. At that moment, I knew the depth of his pain and the significance of my support." What would I do without you?"
Squeezing his hand, I offered a reassuring smile, my voice filled with determination."You will never have to find out. We're in this together, you don't have a choice anymore" I joked lightly.
His eyes locked on mine, his voice wavering with hope, as he echoed my sentiments.
"Together, we will make this right"
