She stood still between the doorway denial seeping into her bones as the feeling of cotton fabric rubbing against her numb fingers scratched at her heart. The sound of her backpack falling to the ground with a heavy thud was the only noise that vibrated in the house. She had just returned from finding out about the unfortunate passing of her boss Pete after dropping Jennie home. Mindlessly she strolled into the bathroom, turning on the faucet splashing cold water onto her pinkish, healing skin. Lisa lifted her head locking eyes with her reflection, her slight greenish-purple cheekbone flashed back at her indicating that it was gradually healing. She caught sight of her trembling lips as her mind subconsciously thought of the memories she had created with Pete and the diner.
She clenched her hands over the white sink, her knuckles paling, a dreaded low sob escaping her. He was the only person in that cursed town who willingly gave her a job, not caring about the rumors that came with her family name. He treated her with respect, yeah he occasionally gave her a hard time like any father would to their daughter but she found it heartwarming. He unknowingly filled the hole she was missing in her life after he left. But now Pete was gone, dead, forever, and she never even had the chance to say goodbye.
Sniffling Lisa wiped her nose and rinsed off her hands before turning off the faucet. She closed her eyes gathering her composure so she could face her sister and cook dinner for everyone. Everything's gonna be okay. Running her tongue over her bottom lip, Lisa took a deep breath in and walked out of the bathroom heading toward the kitchen. She opened the fridge, her eyes darting to every nook and cranny trying to come up with a suitable meal with whatever ingredients they had left but to her dismay, there weren't many options. Sighing Lisa grabbed the cold packet of ground beef, deciding to make spaghetti and meatballs for dinner.
Grabbing everything she needed, Lisa closed the fridge door with her leg turning her body so it was facing the counter. Unbeknownst to her, Nancy noiselessly left the confinement of her room and stood silently next to the fridge, causing Lisa to jump in surprise. "Jesus!" She screamed tumbling toward the counter placing all the ingredients she held in her arms on the cold surface. "Can you not creep up on me like you're Micheal Myers." She playfully glared at her sister who had a red inflamed nose and the corners of her eyes were irritated, most likely from the constant wiping of tears.
"Sorry," Nancy muttered slowly pulling a chair underneath the small island counter they had. "So how was school?" She asked sadly twiddling her thumbs as she waited for Lisa's answer.
Lisa grabbed a stainless steel knife and two barely fresh tomatoes. "Um, it was okay." She hesitated unsure of how to explain that the entire town practically hated their family even more than before. "I think you should stay home for a few more days." This made Nancy raise her brows.
She couldn't help but lightly scoff. "You, the one who's always on my case about going to school, want me to stay home? I can't believe this." Nancy's jaw dropped. "Let me get the camera and record you, so I can show Mom!"
