Sweat rolling down the side of his head, the tension rising in the air. His muscles are unable to relax for some reason. Could it be from the spotlight, or is it because every single person is targeting him.
The next round had been announced as a game of tug of war.
4 teams of 5, only two teams will make it to the next round. Every single one of his teammates does not like him, so things are gonna be tough. Maybe they'll place nice, after all they have to pass too. Right?
"The first match, ladies and gentlemen! Step up to the stage! Remember, folks, the winner is the team that pulls the other teams rope and forces them to cross the line that's placed right in the center of the arena!" That line is bright red placed directly in the middle. The match is won when one team pulls all the other team members across the line.
Both teams stood at the ready, waiting for the match to start. Surely, his teammates will do their job. Right?
Izuku gripped the rope as tight as he could, and being in the front of the squad meant he was the self assigned leader. He turned back to see them all gripping the rope as well, their faces neutral. So far, so good.
"Begin!"
Right off the bat, both teams pulled with all their might, Izuku's team quickly gaining the upper hand. Both sides struggled, being evenly matched as the bout continued. One of the enemy team had a physical enhancement quirk, so things might be a but tricky when he goes all out, so he hopes to end things quickly. As strong as he knows he is, there are limits to his strength.
"Looks like they're evenly matched! What a show! Neither side is giving an inch."
His feet dragged as he forced himself to pull harder, digging his heels into the stone ground. His muscles are straining from all the power he is using.
'I got to admit, they're tough.' Slowly but surely, his own team was starting to gain ground. Two of the opposing members had already crossed the line, three left until they eventually won.
"WOW! All of a sudden, the blue team is gaining the advantage quickly!"
Izuku struggled to keep his body still, but he soon found himself crossing the line along with two others. He looked back to see his team, and it came to a shock to see his team purposely throwing the match.
They may have been holding on to the rope, but they're not putting any effort into pulling. 'Are you kidding me?'
Another person from his team went past the line. Using all of his strength, he pulled and quickly came to a stalemate. He himself was holding down the line, preventing the last member of his team from going over the line.
'GOD FUCKING DAMNIT!'
As much as he disliked it, he had to resort to using his quirk. Holding his breath, everything around him slowed down.
To make things clear, it's not that he hates his quirk. Far from it, it's very useful. What he dislikes if having to use it when it's not needed. Like right now him and his team could've won if they wanted to. But the fact that his fellow second years have a grudge against him so badly that they'd rather throw and lose a chance at winning the sports festival just purposely make him lose.
Using all his strength, he backed up into his teammate and kept pulling with all his power. Time resumed and all his teammates fell backwards as the sudden continued motion of the rope being jerked from their hands caused the enemy team to be pulled along with it and all of them fell forward crossing the line giving Izuku and his team the victory.
The moment everything resumed, things seemed to stop once more. At one point, it seemed like Izuku's team was gonna lose, and the next, the entire opposite team was being dragged across the ground, leaving Izuku's team as the victor.
