"Sophie, wait up!" Max shouted from across the hallway. It was the end of the day, and I wanted to get as far as possible from Max. I was still mad at him for what he said at the cafeteria.
"Soph..."
"What do you want?" I asked, angry.
"Look, I'm sorry about what I said at the cafeteria."
"Whatever."
"Soph, I'm serious." he said grabbing my arm.
"Let go of my arm, you're hurting me!" I said while trying to wriggle out of his grip.
"Let. Her. Go." Josh said grabbing Max.
"Stay out of this man." Max said, letting go of me and facing Josh.
"Let's go Sophie." Josh said, giving Max a death stare.
"No, you're not going anywhere." Max said, grabbing my arm again.
"Is there a problem here, Max?" Rebecca asked with her arms crossed.
Max let go of my arm and turned around.
"What do you want?" Max spat.
"What I want, is for you to stay away from Sophie." Rebecca said, shooting daggers at Max with her eyes.
"Whatever." Max rolled his eyes and walked away.
"Oh my gosh, Sophie, are you okay?" Rebecca said, pulling me into a hug.
"Yeah, thanks to you and Josh." I said.
"Let's get you home. See you tomorrow Rebecca." Josh said.
"Yeah, bye!" Rebecca said.
Josh and I walked out of the school and started walking home together.
"I didn't know Max was like that." I said, breaking the silence.
"Me either." Josh responded. "Why are you still with him anyway? I don't mean to be insensitive but, Max is a walking red flag."
"I think I might break up with him tomorrow...I don't want to do it over text." I said.
"Just be careful, okay?" Josh said.
"I will...and Josh?"
"Yeah?"
"Thank you."
........
The next day
"Morning Sophie." Lily said.
"Morning Lily." I replied.
"Where're you going?" Lily asked.
"I have to go talk to Max."
"Okay, just be back for homeroom." Lily said.
I walked over to Max's homeroom class and motioned for him to follow me.
He stood up and followed me. I lead him outside.
"We need to talk." I said.
"I know. Sophie, I'm really sorry about yesterday. Lately I've been going through some stuff, and I know that doesn't give me an excuse for lashing out like that." Max said.
"You think?" I said sarcastically.
"You have every right to not forgive me and break up with me, but I just wanted to say I'm so sorry." Max said, holding my hands.
"What you did yesterday really scared me." I said.
"I know, but I just wanted to tell you that it won't happen again."
