CHOI SEUNGHYUN POV
I made myself comfortable on my new gray armchair as I stared out through the industrial glass panel. It stretched from floor to ceiling, offering me a wonderful view of Seoul's night landscape. I poured myself a generous glass of red wine and got some roasted almonds. Sitting here in my thick, fluffy robe and designer silk pajamas with wine was my favorite stress reliever.
I watched from my 12th floor apartment as tiny cars zoomed around the wide city streets in a whirlwind of flashing lights. Suddenly, I was reminded of Ji and Hyunnie.
Jiyong liked Hyunnie. Their relationship was sour, like a badly aged wine.
I would never tell them this, but I wanted to fix their relationship.
From what they each told me, they were friends as good as strawberries and whipped cream during childhood. Seunghyun was a cute, innocent baby. He was sweet and helpful and a good boy up until his final year of middle school.
I think that's when he began changing. He turned...angsty and irritable.
I don't know why.
He developed a massive superiority-inferiority complex where he felt inferior but acted superior to hide it.
He cursed a lot and teased people.
That's when Jiyong moved too. He joined my high school, and I re-introduced him to Hyunnie.
But I think Hyunnie was trying to keep his 'smug bad boy' facade up and hurt Jiyong by failing to sufficiently acknowledge him.
Then, Jiyong wasn't the way he is now, either. Well, he was practically born with his sass and swag.
But he was confident back then. That's the sole difference between his high school years and now. Although he acts smug, stuck up, snarky and cool, he isn't confident. Deep inside, he thinks he isn't good enough. Thinks he's worthless.
Hyunnie made him that way,
When Jiyong moved, Hyunnie would ignore him. Told Ji to call him Seungri, not Hyunie as he did when they were children. Hyun would go to parties and social events. Older girls were after him. He bathed in glory, yet acted disinterested.
That flipped Ji's switch.
Ji, despite being a sophomore, did none of that. He was only into music and fashion. His hobbies were actually cool. Ji had produced an album of 14 tracks in just 6 months! Although he acted the opposite, I know for a fact Hyun thought Ji was unbelievably awesome.
That made him build his facade up higher. It pushed Ji further.
Somehow, they stumbled through high school with a semi-healthy friendship, me mediating their disagreements.
Finally, the day came. All along, I knew fully well that this day would come eventually. We were supposed to meet in Hyun's house. I was running late. Of all days, it HAD to be that day.
I had a sickening feeling that something bad was about to occur, but I tried to shake it off. In hindsight, I should've hurried.
I should've at least called them to say I would be late.
It could've helped.
But I didn't.
By the time I arrived, the front door was unlocked. Hyun usually kept his door safely locked.
I remembered how nervously I set my hand on the shiny doorknob and paused. Even from there I heard shouting and angry insults.
Jiyong and Hyun's voices.
I remembered how I ran up the stairs and burst into Hyun's room.
His and Ji's hair looked like it was pulled at. Their faces were red. They were panting, with sleeves rolled up. Ji had blood trickling down the side of his thin lips.
"JIYONG! HYUN!" I yelled.
I pulled them apart. Jiyong left right away and Hyun broke down in heart-shattering sobs.
Hyun wouldn't tell me what happened, just that he had fought with Ji and that it was all his fault.
The following day, I spoke to Jiyong. Ji told me that he and Hyun had fought because he couldn't take Hyun's behavior anymore. Hyun didn't want to be seen with Ji anymore. He said Ji was merely a 'quiet, skinny, music slug'.
I was so shocked when Ji had told me that. Music was, and still is, the most precious thing to Jiyong. Music has helped him through his darkest moments and was there in his sweetest victories. Music was his entire life, and he was highly dedicated to making his own.
Ji was happiest when he was with his music.
Even Hyun knew that.
He knew it like the back of his hand.
Yet he had hurt Ji.
On purpose.
Next, Jiyong said that he had told Hyun what he really thought of him. That Hyun was a shallow, cheap, fake idiot who never used his brain. Apparently, the fight had escalated dramatically from there. With insults and accusations soon flying around.
When I had asked Ji about his bloody lip, he replied that Hyun had punched him.
This fight had snapped the last strings of a barely stitched together relationship. I recall how suddenly and passively it had happened.
One day, they had simply stopped speaking to each other, and remained that way until their recent coffee date.
Ji seemed joyful after that. Happier than he's been in a while.
Hyun seemed enthusiastic as well. Hyun had actually been trying to change.
Hopefully, this will repair their hot mess of a...relationship.
