Sarah sat on her couch, starring out the large glass window of the sliding door that led to the back yard deck. Her ex boyfriend Brian was standing there looking back at her.
They had broken up a week ago and she still hurt from it. She was young, but she knew that he was "The One". It had been easy for her to see herself in his arms for many years to come. But then he had cheated on her.
She had cought him with someone else, both of them were naked from the waist down and in the bed together. Brian had tried to tell her that it wasn't what it looked like, but Sarah thought the whole thing was self explanatory.
Sarah still loved him, but she felt so betrayed. Brain was now dead however, and he just stood there on the other side of the door starring at her while she cried on the couch and starred back at him. He gently leaned from side to side as he starred, as if he was swaying in the breeze.
Sarah had gotten together with Brian the night a group of her friends had gotten together to watch some dumb movie about a girl that was in love with a Zombie that still had feelings for her. The movie had been pure garbage, but her and Brian had ended up hooking up so that had made it all worth while, at least until she had caught him with someone else.
She had done little more than cry since the break up. It was when she had started to hurt herself in little ways and question her vary life that her friends had stepped in.
They told her that she needed to forget about the creep and his new "Friend", and get out of the house and live a little. And although nobody said it out load, Sarah was the only one of her friends who had a car, so she was going to be the one to take them where they wanted to take her.
So off for a girls night out on the town they had went. First Sarah's friends had taken her to a movie. It was a comedy to try and cheer her up. But it didn't quite work out like they had hoped, because it had been a romantic comedy that only served to make Sarah feel even worse.
So they followed the movie up with a bite to eat. The mall that set next to the theater that they had been at had a nice selection of places to get food from with a big open area with lots of tables to sit and eat at.
After about twenty minutes of eating and discussing what they would do next, something unexpected had happened. A blood curdling scream had torn through the air, followed by a lot more panicked screaming and a lot of growling.
Over at the far end of the area they were in, where the commissary ended and the rest of the mall began, there was a growing number of people that were attacking anyone that came near them, and when no one came near, they charged after people and attacked them.
People all around Sarah and her friends starred in a morbid curiosity at what was happening, just like her and her friends. This morbid curiosity did not last long however, when it became clear that this group of people were not just attacking everyone they came in contact with, they were killing them, biting them, ripping them apart in a big bloody mess. Their attention not held long on one kill, because there was so much more around them to grab their attention.
Once the moment of morbid curiosity had passed, it was quickly replaced by terror and panic. Everyone started screaming and running for an exit. Sarah lost track of three of her four friends. A quick look behind her gave Sarah the location of one of her lost friends, just before some of the other panicked runners knocked her down and left her for the blood thirsty mob that were on their heels.
Sarah and her friend Kate, the only one she was able to keep track of, made it successfully out of the mall and into the parking lot. This however, was far from any safe haven. There were more of the blood thirsty crazies all over the parking lot, a lot more.
Sarah and Kate ran as fast as they could to the car. Sarah fumbled with the keys as she tried to unlock the driver's side door. The whole time Kate kept yelling at her, "Come on! Come on!"
Sarah almost broke the key off in the lock as she opened the door and got in. She unlocked the passenger side door for Kate, who instead of opening it and getting in, just screamed as she was slammed up against the car by an attacker.
Kate slid down the side of the car. Her screams turning into a gurgling choke as blood spurted out of her ruined throat.
Sarah set there behind the wheel and cried, until she realized someone was pounding on the window beside her. She looked up and saw it was some old man that she had never met before. Half of the old man's face had been ripped off at some point and he had a knife sticking out of his chest. The door was still unlocked, so Sarah locked it real quick.
At this point there was someone else pounding on the passenger side window. Sarah looked over and saw one of her teachers from school, Mrs. Nielsen. Her face was covered with blood and her eyes looked pail. Then Sarah started to feel panic come on strong again, as she saw Kate getting to her feet. Kate's throat was a torn mess with chunks missing, but she was getting to her feet and once she noticed Sarah, she started pounding on the car as well.
Sarah realized at this point that the attackers were not crazy people, they were dead people.
She started the car and backed out of her parking place so fast that she ran over someone and hit another parked car. Not caring at this point if the person she hit was alive or dead, she put the care in drive and took off as fast as she could.
What should have been a twenty minute drive home, took close to an hour. There were abandoned and wrecked cars everywhere, and she was forced to backtrack and find a lot of alternate routes to get home.
Sarah could not find her parents when she had got home. She tried not to think about all the blood she saw on and around her parents car when she got home.
She had been home an hour when Brian had shown up. Now she sat on the couch and starred at him as he just stood there on the other side of the door starring at her.
She still loved him, even though he had cheated on her. And as she thought about him, the movie they had been watching the night they had gotten together came to mind. Once she started thinking about that movie, she realized that Brian was not acting like the other dead people she had seen. He was not growling or beating on the window to get at her. All he did was stand there looking at her.
Could it be possible? Dead as he clearly was, could he still love her? She stopped crying as she thought about him and the ridiculous thought that she could live the life of the girl in the movie.
She got up from the couch. There was only one way to test the theory that was taking hold of her mind. She got some ground beef from the fridge and went back to where Brian stood waiting for her.
She stood right in front of him, the only thing between them was the glass of the door. Brian still did nothing but stand there looking at her. Sarah took a deep breath and put her hand on the handle on the sliding door. Still no reaction from Brian.
Hope began to swell in her heart. She opened the door a little, just enough to hold the meat out to him.
With movement that was too quick for her to follow he grabbed her hand and ripped her out of the house. She dropped the ground beef and fell to her knees. The whole time Brian held onto her hand.
Sarah looked up and saw Brian raise her hand to his lips, and for a brief moment she thought he was going to kiss it, but then he started biting her hand and tearing off chunks of flesh.
At this point Sarah started to scream. She had been so focused on Brian that she had not noticed the other half dozen dead people in the yard.
As they closed in on her, she saw her parents and one of her lost friends from the mall among them.
Sarah screamed as they all took hold of her. And as they ripped her apart, all thought of true love conquering all was forgotten.
