Today is the 12th of January. At least I'm sure it is, because that's what I overheard from the priests. That means I've been doing this whole 'sewer delving' thing for at least a few days now, and I've paid off about a third of my debt. That was the least of my worries however, because right now I'm being held five feet above the ground by cobwebs in the nest of a giant spider that's going to eat me if I don't do anything. Across the nest from me was Liselle, who was in the same predicament as I and struggling to free herself of the web to no avail. The nest itself was really just a few cob webs holding the carcasses of dead animals (and people) spread across a dead end in the sewers. On the brightside however, the spider responsible for catching us left minutes ago, presumably to catch more prey like us, meaning we could escape without it noticing. You're probably wondering how this situation came to be.
It all happened while we were doing our usual routine in the sewers until out of nowhere I felt a sharp pain in my left shoulder and dropped my knife. I tried looking at what happened only to find out I can't move my head or the rest of my body for that matter. I then hear Liselle give out a brief squeal that was suddenly cut short. After a few minutes, the two of us were wrapped in web and hauled off to the spider's nest where we now reside.
I looked up at Liselle who was still trying to break free "I think we found Bess"
She stopped to look back at me and replied "You mean that giant spider?"
"Yeah. I saw some posters around the city."
"Oh yeah I read some of what was on that. Didn't it say something about a spider with paralyzing venom?"
"Which is why we weren't able to move when it bit us. So if this really is Bess then she'd worth a lot of money."
"Then let's find a way out of these cobwebs"
"I was just about to say that. Now let me think..." I then looked carefully around the nest to find something that would free one of us. Aside from the corpses there wasn't anything that would help us, at least not while our whole body was bound by web.
Then I heard Eeuna's voice "*sigh* It seems you've gotten yourself into another deadly situation with no hope. I guess have no choice but to help you... again" I then felt an almost searing heat in my hands which proceeded to burn away the web with a loud "woof" noise that flammable materials so often make. "Woops. I got a little carried away. That wasn't very quiet so you might want help your friend before that spider comes back to check on you"
"Oh yeah I didn't think about just burning the webs." Why the hell did I not think of that? I then approached Liselle to burn away the web, albeit not as powerful and certainly not as loud as Eeuna did a second ago.
She dropped to the ground, still holding her staff surprisingly enough. "Thank you. Now hold still for a second" Liselle stood up and cast a healing spell on each of us. By the time she was done we heard a skittering sound and out of the corner of my eye I could see the very same spider I saw only a few minutes ago. It was as big as an elk with eight hairy legs and 6 eyes that looked at us with hungry intent. " You know, for something so big, Bess sure is good at sneaking around."
"Distract it." I said, concentrating on a spell.
"Oh no problem just let me- ah!" The spider tried to bite Liselle but not before she parried it with her staff.
Meanwhile, I recited an incantation "Potentia telarum invoco te" and aimed my hand at one of the many legs of the skittering creature. Quite ironically, a ball of cobwebs shot from my hand and rendered it immobile, but such irony would not immobilize a creature of such girth for long. "Get back!" I exclaimed as I concentrated on yet another spell. "Occidere scopum jaculo glaciei" I held my hands together and in the middle formed a bolt made of pure ice which launched itself right into the spider's face. It didn't kill the creature, but it sure did a number on it. "Get it while it's weak!"Liselle then bashed the staggered spider with her staff until it was dead.
I used the cylindrical device (Apparently they call it a tracker) to collect the bounty that this spider no doubt had and said "Normally I'd say we should just press on, but that fight took a lot out of me." I've been making farely liberal use of the spells within the tome that Mephilies gave me as of late. Many of the spells in there are powerful, as seen here, but very tiring for a novice mage like myself. I haven't seen Mephilies ever since he gave me the spell book but I have to say, I might've died were it not for that 'free sample' as he called it.
"I think I've had enough here too" Liselle said with a huff "let's get out of here. I hate insects."
And so we decided to leave the sewers a little early
