As soon as I got home I sat on the couch and let it sink in that schools over. Then I realized I should throw an end of middle school party! My parents are visiting my aunt next week and I'm supposed to stay at my friends house, but they won't know if I stay here, right? I made a snapchat post about it and went on with my day. Within the next hour everyone was talking about it. I was getting pretty excited. I'm not sure how mature this party will be since I'm only graduating middle school, but I'll get out my parents alcohol just in case. The rest of the week was pretty chill besides planning the party. But then on Friday I decided to go to the pool with my friends Kody and Devan. We got there and made a beeline for the slide. While we stood there we overheard a conversation between a girl who looked about our age and an older girl.
"And then he fucking iced me out!" The older girl said. "He's such a condescending douchebag!"
"For real!" The other girl replied. She sounded really familiar. "And honestly, you can do so much better. Now, my standards are pretty low, but even I would break up with him. What as asshole. And I thought middle school drama was interesting." Huh, so she is about our age then.
There were a few people separating us, but we could still hear them and see them vaguely. The middle schooler looked really pretty but also really familiar. Her hair was light brown and faded into platinum blonde. She hadn't gotten it wet yet and it looked very light, flowy, and beautiful. My eyes trailed down. She was wearing a bright blue bikini. They continued their conversation.
"Your so lucky!" The older girl said. "You're quiet so you can eavesdrop on any conversation get all the juicy tea! I'm all popular so everyone's lying to me constantly."
She laughed. "Yeah, it is nice. I think I'm basically invisible to them. But I have so much fucking dirt on them, you wouldn't believe."
"Considering how quiet you are at school, I bet no one would guess the dirt you have everyone, right Em?"
Wait, Em?! I recognized her now! She's the quiet girl at school! I had no idea she was so hot, she always wears her hair in a low ponytail and the most revealing outfits she wore were t-shirts and jeans. I've never seen her wear a pair of shorts. But I also don't really pay attention to her, so I don't know.
"Did she just call her Em?" Kody whispered to me.
"I think so, I had no idea Em was so hot!" I whispered back.
"Right?" Devan said. "All she'd have to do is talk a little and wear a crop top and the boys would be all over her. I wonder why she never took advantage of that."
"Maybe she doesn't like popularity," I assumed.
"Probably," Kody agreed. "Man, that sucks. In wonder if Em's as hot on the front side as she is on the back."
Em and the other girl turned around to face us. Yep, it was definitely Em, and yes, she was as hot on the front side as on the back side. Holy Hell.
"Kody?" She asked. "And Quinn. And Devan. Shit."
I was about to say something when she got to the front of the line and immediately went down the slide, seeming desperate to get away from us. The girl she was with stared at us awkwardly until it was her turn to go down.
When we got off the slide, I kept thinking about Em. I had never seen or looked at her that way. Maybe she's actually cool? I saw her in the pool later but didn't want to be weird or make things awkward. I did glance at her occasionally, but- who am I kidding? I watched her a bunch. I was just so fascinated at how much she changes when she isn't in school. To think that she's probably been that way this whole time makes me sad. So much wasted potential. Then I had an amazing idea. What if I invited her to my party? If she looked and acted similar to how she was acting now, the preppy girls would probably like her. I decided to go in the wave pool to go ask her. Her and the other girl didn't see me and I heard them talking.
