Prologue:

Jess aimlessly wandered, marching through the snow, she had no destination but she knew she couldn't turn back now. She'd been lost for about an hour and found herself at a frozen lake when she spotted a small island of trees on the opposite side. She thought if she could only reach it she would be safe. She turned around to check if she was being followed or not but all she saw was the same white horizon, the snow was like a blizzard now. The tears had long since frozen on her cheeks but she could still feel a warm trickle of blood coming from the hole in her chest.

She was about three-quarters of the way through when she suddenly became dizzy and her sight blurred. Stumbling slightly, she heard the ice creek beneath her and decided to rest before carrying on. She sat on the ice and stared at her hands until her vision returned then she unzipped her jacket and checked on her wound. Although the cold had numbed the pain, crimson blood was still leaking from the opening and the white of bone shone through - there was a rib sticking out at an angle, this was serious...

Just as sudden as she had stumbled, there was a crack from the ice behind her. Jess' first instinct was to get up and run but a humid heat surrounded her and all wind had died. This was it; they had caught up to her...

Footsteps grew and became louder and closer, followed by the screeching of claws against the ice, like nails on a chalkboard. This was oh-so similar for jess.

She wasn't going to face them again...she'd rather die...

She threw her arm in the backpack she'd been carrying and drew out an ice-pick and screamed as she plunged it into the frozen lake's surface below her. She grinned as the ice cracked around her. A roar sounded from behind her but was cut short as a rush of icy cold lake water rushed into her ears and mouth. Time was frozen as she fell deeper into the abyss, she fell dizzy again but this time she welcomed it, her vision was fading rapidly this time and she caught one last glimpse of the figures above until everything went black completely...
