Time's Up

Wow, poor soul, Suzie doesn't have much left. I should hang out with her for the remaining time. Then again, everybody does.

Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot to introduce myself. Hello, I'm Clarence, and I go to Normida High School. You see, in my world, everybody has a clock that ticks down until the time of your death. Tick, tock. Tick, tock. Everybody can see your clock and you theirs, but you can't see your own clock, nor can they see theirs. Most find this infuriating. Thinking how unfair it is that others can see how much time they have left, while the owner of the clock can't see it. Then again, Life is never fair, is it.

I woke up one morning, birds singing, the clear sapphire sky with the bright, shining sun in the center. How lovely; how unfitting. Today some poor soul will die out of the blue, and they wouldn't have a time notice. In most cases, people become kind, or they have surprises, or the people they greet have a grim look on their face. The deceased never think twice about it anyway, so they never see it coming.

Tick, tock. Tick, tock.

I went into the kitchen. The cold hair was hitting my skin while the sound of cooking and the pitter patter of feet was present. My mother turned to face me with a big smile on her face. She always greeted me with a kiss on the head, but today she gave me a kiss on the head and a great hug. She made my favorite breakfast, a bit strange, but hey, never argue with food.

Tick, tock. Tick, tock.

I arrived at the school, everybody looked at me and said hi, a few even coming up to hug me. What's happening? These people never give me hugs. Hell, I don't even know half these people. I hate this sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach. I know something's coming, but what?

Tick, tock. Tick, tock.

At lunch, everybody came to sit next to me and talk, but why now all a sudden? Most girls were talking to me as if we've known each other for years when I met her right now. Everybody was giving me hugs, how uncomfortable. Even the teachers were being kind to me, letting me do anything I wanted for today, even those who hated me. I don't like this, not one bit.

Tick, tock. Tick, tock.

It was the end of the day, finally. Again, everybody said goodbye and a few hugs. I usually walk home, my mother's busy while my father's at work. A few girls offered to give me a ride home, they all sounded worried, but I refused. How can I get a ride from a girl I don't even know? I shrugged it off, but that sinking feeling stayed for the entire day.

Tick, tock. Tick, tock.

I was walking across the street, listening to music when I saw it. Not until now when I saw the car speeding at me, did I realize.

Those bastards knew it was my time. That's why they were so kind. They knew, and they didn't have the need to tell me. But maybe that's just me, because then again,

Life's not fair,

and Death, doesn't wait for anybody.
